I don't see it. Sony makes things like DVD players and TVs as well as production. They'll be pushing Blu-Ray in as many aspects of the industry as possible since they've already invested heavily in Blu-Ray. Microsoft has a HD-DVD add on for the Xbox 360 that may come out sometime this year.

Blu-Ray wins.

Seriously, I don't see HD-DVD coming out on top. In this case, Sony is the 800 lb gorilla, not Microsoft. MS if huge in the computer software world, yes, but its not to the point where they can determine the outcome of non-computer related fields. And, in this case, they're not really trying. They're making an add on that very few people will actually buy to a gaming console. This is barely a blip on the radar to the HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray matchup.

The thing right now is there are two 800lb gorillas fighting things out because thier territories are beginning to merge together. The PC world is very fast encroaching on the TV world. More and more with digital content people are using computers to store and view TV and Movies. The TV networks are seeing this and making thier shows available for download both for iPods and for just general PC viewing. You can see on these boards how both movies and TV shows are being used on PCs (both legally and illegally). Microsoft is not looking at this from just the console market but they are looking at it from the everyone has a PC in thier house market which they control 90% of. With HD-DVD being cheaper and easier to produce there is a far better chance that there will be billions of HD-DVD drives sold to Microsofts PC market. If HD-DVD becomes the standard for PCs then it will become the standard for Movies since people won't want to have have both an HD-DVD and a Blu-ray drive in thier computers.

It should be interesting. Blu-Ray has Sony (PS3) as well as Dell and Apple. HP will use both Blu-Ray and HD DVD players. HD DVD has Wintel and Toshiba. It seems like Blu-Ray has more support so far and there'll be more places using it initially. The price difference can also play a roll in HD DVD's favor, though.

AFAIK the only support MS is giving HD-DVD is a single add-on periphial yet to be released onto their new gaming console. What else is MS doing to encourage HD-DVD over Blu-Ray? I can't seem to find anything else.

Interesting. So Vista is going to probably have easy access for ripping HD-DVDs and other options available to it, possibly shipping HD-DVD drives via HP after Vista is released later this year.

Now, I like HP and I dislike Dell. HP seems to be doing both technologies, while Dell is going Blu-Ray.

No major manufacturer is only in the HD-DVD camp (unless HP has converted completely, but I can't find any evidence of that). Sony has more pull in the industry than Toshiba, but MS is combining forces with them. In the short term, not many people are going to get HD-DVD or Blu-Ray drives on their computers, and people rarely upgrade their OS without buying a new computer.

So, I see this as a long drawn out battle that won't be decided for another two or three years at least, when the technologies have settled in a bit and more people buy more and more new computers that take advantage of the new technologies.

Is this an accurate summary of the situation as it currently stands?

My sneaking suspicion is that the first big rush of people with Blu-Ray will be the people buying PS3s. On computers it'll trickle in much slower for both. So it'll be some time before this battle is settled. I'm suspecting unless there is a decisive win someone will develop a player that can handle both Blu-Ray and HD DVD.

I'm pulling for HD-DVD. Sony is an underhanded company that will get no money of mine. I'm sick of DRM laden formats that dictate how I can view media I paid for. And since I have a 19" 8 year old TV to watch movies on HD isn't much of a priority. I'll buy a new TV next year though so maybe it will be an issue then. I think regular DVD's do just fine, sure more storage would be cool though.

I don't have a High-Def television and won't be able to afford one until the prices come way down, so I don't really have a dog in this fight. :)

Based on my recollection of VHS vs Beta, the winning format will probably be the one first adopted by the adult flm industry. If HD-DVD is cheaper to create for the "film" makers, then it may have an early edge. Mark my words. Let the Pr0n be your guide! ;)

The porn industry is going Blu-ray.
