BOEF vs. BORF

Would the Title of the BOEF have impacted my decision.

I'm in wicht's boat right now. Based on an e-mail from Teff-Bill, I popped into their boards and had a look around. I've browsed the preview material a little bit, to at least be able to throw around informed opinions rather than knee-jerk reactions.

Not only does the preview material look like bondage/fetish stuff for the most part, AV himself puts out a call on the boards to pass out fliers at BDSM clubs!

Sorry, no thanks. I don't care what the title is, if this is the content and the target audience, I'm not biting. No perceived pun intended.

Actually, I would buy a book if it seriously dealt with romance, love, even lust (a little). I would do so especially if it went so far as to include character motivation and application in a fantasy setting with historical background relevant to medieval Europe. A mature book with details on courtship, marriages, expectations of brides and grooms etc. and then hooks and plots along with suggested scripting of certain events would have been awesome.

The problem with the Book of Elf Porn is that, while it may have some of this, it threw in a bunch of photoshopped elf porn as well as stuff that goes beyond romance and into fetishism. It did so with such fanfare/controversy and what I considered immature attitude, that I cannot overlook or forgive it. A rational, historical and truly mature look at love and courtship would have been on my to-buy list, but the BoEF failed to be that right out of the gate, with that initial press release. Also, I'm sort of miffed at how I perceive Valterra's attitude toward WotC to be and how he felt, and also how another person associated with the project felt, about the controversy the infamous press release caused. Because of this I simply will not purchase BoEF or any other book from Valar.

So, in light of that I chose the name of the book would not have impacted my decision. It's the content of the book, the circumstances in which it was introduced to us in and the subsequent attitude of Valar that I object to.

Oh, and Ditto to what BigFreekinGoblinoid said.

In the end you are still talking about mechanics for matters that need no mechanics and bringing matters into a game that I would rather not have as part of my campaigns.

Call it what you will, I have no need for soft core nor for pregnancy and STD tables nor for anything mechanical along this line.

I have played romances through in games, both as GM and as player.

I need no rules

And we can keep the happy ropes far, far away

I'm not sure which I would find less pleasant: role-playing romantic scenes with my male friends or role-playing erotic scenes with them. Tough call. Either way, I'd rather spend my time eating sand.

Player 1: "Let's go on an adventure!"

DM: "Titania gives you a crystal. She says 'anytime you need me, you can use this.'"

Player 2: "Uhh, are you guys being funny?"

Player 3: "Ewwww..."

now THAT is funny.

My guess Arthur is that the message is going to be much the same no mattrerhow many times you post a variation on "What do you think of the BoEF?"

Disinterest in the product.

But I suppose that, according to this quote from Hunter 1828 on the Valar boards...

Actually, Arthur and I have to take partial credit for those threads at EN World as between us we have started three or four, or at the very least kept posting when they were on the verge of dying.

...I suspect we can count on about one BoEF thread/week until the thing goes to press.

I think the phrase "There's no such thing as bad publicity" is the tenet under which they are, understandably, operating.

But I have to wonder why if Arthur thinks as little of the folks at EN World as this quote would suggest...

I'm just fed up with their immaturity, and then they critizise ME for telling them to grow up...

.. I have to wonder why he continues to solicit the opinions of EN World's posters.

Actually, no I don't. You are being sold to folks. These aren't curious pollsters satisfying their curiosity. These are people who are marketing a product by making sure there is always some BoEF thng on page one (either by posting or bumping). Nothing wrong with that, plenty of companies have done similar things before. (Though, in truth, it was ususally done in the Publisher's Forum).

I just can't recall their representatives holding EN World in such contempt.

I would be less likely to buy it. THe only reason I'll buy it now is so I can say "D00d - check this out, a friggin book of elf porn!" The Book of Romantic Fantasy is further away from elf-porn.

Heck, if it were called the Book of Elf-porn I'd be even more likely to buy it.
