Bonus XP for writing up a story hour?

hero points

My players get hero points which they can use to do such things as
re-roll dice, add modifiers to checks, or even trade in a number for a feat, ability increase, or other character buff.

Seems to work out ok.

I give "Fate Points", one per journal entry written. These function like "Action Points" in d20 Modern, or like "Force Points" in d20 Star Wars. Since there are about 4-5 sessions between levels, that works out to about how many Action Points d20 Modern gives, but the players have to work for them.

It's a nice place for them to find their voice as a character... I'd do more to encourage it, but on some level I feel that you can't bribe someone to do something that should be fun without ruining part of the fun.

I give a flat 5% bonus to xp for this session IF I got a journal after the last session.

This is where I was headed as well (the campaign hasn't begun yet), but after reading through this thread I think I'll give 50/level a shot.

Consider it yoinked, Elf Witch (and others). :D

re

I don't give experience for writing up backgrounds normally. I just expect it.

I am planning to use a journal xp system for extended periods of downtime. If I want to say the players have nothing eventful happen for a number of years, then I will have them right up a journal and give them an xp award based on it.

My new DM awards extra skill points on level up for frequent journal entries, rather than an xp award. I have no idea what kind of journal to skill point ratio it is though, as I have not yet leveled up.
