Book of Exalted Deed : Mature ?

Maybe they might also have more on sacrifices. After all it's still ok as a good action to sacrifice a sentient being that is genuinely willing (therefore no enchantment spells and the like).

Sacrificing valuable material objects is still acceptable to good, though sacrificing animals though could be different. Even though to many people sacrificing an animal and spilling out it's entrails isn't much different than killing an animal for meat, as long as it isn't done in any particularly cruel manner.

In the ancient world, animals who were killed for meat, were often symbolically sacrificed or offered to a god as well. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

Actually I was thinking in modern terms where many people feel it's wrong to sacrifice animals. Even though I think they still sacrifice animals in the Santeria religion even today.

I think the thing is when people think of sacrificing animals they think of satanic wannabes putting cats in microwaves.

As far as I'm concerned, 95% of the BoVD wasn't mature. Of the remaining 5%, 4% (overall) was the graphic artwork, and only 1% of the overall book even approached "mature". Compared to a game where you effectively kill the easter bunny and steal all of his easter eggs, the BoVD was tame at worst. If you are having trouble figuring out why the BoED is "mature", it's probably for the same reason (i.e. none).

this is a bit silly: WotC have every right to be slightly concerned that there may be a backlash to them putting out a book that dealt with torture, devil/demon worship, willing mutilation, human sacrifice and a whole range of other stuff.

hile I was far from offended, I can see how that could be considered material for older readers.

What ina book of exalted deeds could compare with those things on a 'maybe kids shouldn't look at this' level?

I don't think the mature rating pertains to the material itself, but rather an implied manner of applying that material. For instance, a lot of the material can easily be put into a miniseries, anime series or some other media, and I'd have few qualms about those of 15-16 years of age being exposed to it. However, in that media, these people are simply observers.

In an RPG, however, this material is not just being observed, but is being used within an inter-active environment. As such, while I could watch a movie containing such subject matter sitting next to my 15 year old nephew in a movie theater, I would be very skepticle about including it in a game in which I was DMing him.

It's also a safety-net for over-zealous parents. When a parental group shouts, "look what we found our kids with," WotC gets to reply with, "It's labeled 'Mature' for a reason. Your innability to control your kids isn't our problem."

That dealt with, I don't think Celebacy belongs in the BoVD. A lot of cultures relate reproductive fluids to the soul's ability to create (Hindu is big on this), so the retention of these fluids could easily be associated to things like Conjuration [Creation] spells, Metacreative Psionics, and other such magics.

I agree with this. still not sure what will be 'mature' about the BoED though...
