Book of Exalted Deed : Mature ?

From some of the posts above, mature topics covered might be ritual prostitution, social engineering, castrati and sacrifices. Using real world analougs we have such issues as cicumcision, and its relation to sacrifice. Then you have religious practices like flagellation, snake handling, self deprivation, pain rituals and secret societies who, though part of the religion, may have practices most would find offensive. Msytery cults and extremist factions could also be considered mature for their fanatacism and practices.

The discussion of religion is always for mature minds, especially when personal faith is removed from the issue. Also, since this will be done with the intent of being used in a game, the rules presented, and the informationbehind them may be designed to be in opposition to most parties, thus making good bad :)

From the front page story, it loks like I was right about Wyatt writing the book (and now we know why Baraendur hasn't chimed in with comments, too :) ). I'm really looking forward to this.

Perhaps because it's planned to be the opposite of the Book of Vile Darkness, which, despite its name, suffered from a somewhat immature text.;)

Maybe you can do exalted healing. Such healing cannot be re-damaged except by vile damage or in a unhallowed location...
hmmmm... What a dumb idea that would be...

Well, thats what mature means in this context. The Book of Vulgar Dirtyness demonstrates a high level of IMMATURITY, full of extraneous blood, boobs, and boogers and such. The sexual refernces are all from a perspective similar to that of a misanthropic 14 year old boy, and things like blood, guts, diseases and other assorted ickyness are examined with that same bizarre fascination that the weird kid in kindergarten who picked his nose and ate the boogers must have had .

Note: Do not interpret this as me accusing Monte Cook or those involved in the BOED, which I have not read, of being like those hypothetical individuals.

If it exist, I'll call dibs on it! Indestructible hit points, gimme !

Com'on, Baraendur, tell us, is there Exalted damage or Exalted healing ?

:D

You know I remember reading how the Book of Vile Darkness was WotC's way of testing the market for a mature D&D book. And it's likely that with that little market test they tried to play it safe...

Apparently their test has returned some good enough results that they're willing to try some more. Now only if they could put in more about a direction of a campaign and some philosophical elements than they did with the Book of Vile Darkness.

I'm willing to bet that this "mature" label is really meant to pimp the book. (After all anything labeled "mature can expect an increase in sales.)

However, with that said, I am willing to bet that the book contains discussion of what counts as "righteous". I'm willing to bet that it will discuss real world religion (something that D&D has traditionally shyed away from). I'd imagine that it would discuss holy wars, crusades, and jihads, and if and when the use of such violence would be acceptable. A while back White Wolf released a Hunter:the Reckoning book entitled Wayward. It talked about hunters who followed a utilitarianism-like creed that allowed them to sacrifice and murder innocent people if it allowed them to achieve the noble goal of ridding the world of monsters (after all, you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs). I imagine that Book of Exalted Deeds will contain similar ethical debates.

I wonder if we should expect more books from the "mature" line. Perhaps, WotC will be silly enough to give us a collection of alignment related books. Is there any suitable magic items related to Chaos, Law, and Neutrality? Else, they might actually consider producing mature material, which I really doubt.

It's just a label slapped on to make it more attractive.

You want to see something with a 'mature' label on it? Wait for the 3rd ed. release of the 'Complete Guide to Unlawful Carnal Knowledge';)
