[BoVD] So... did the sky fall?

mmm. its a bit like dungeon/poly95. the super-secret sealed section actually had a really cool adventure, but some of the stuff+presentation was.... ewwwww.......

(and I normally run a pretty dark type of game)

i would add my 2c, but we dont have them anymore.

Okay that was a disturbing comment...

Psion, does that mean you're going to review it? (Btw I don't know about junivile but I will say it's not as "mature" or disturbing as some things I've seen lately. *points to the middle part of Return of the Joker: Batman Beyond* THAT was disturbing!)

hey La Bete... has Graphix got it already? they must have sorted the distro problem out since i moved over here 6 months ago... or is there some where else to buy gaming stuff i didn't know about?

Graphix? dont get me started.... where do I buy most of my gaming kit? Sydney.

i know... i was getting the sea frighted edition of dragon in the normal magazine shops down lambton quay a month before they were getting them in for a little bit...

how do you get stuff from sydney? mail order...

oh yeah, i like the BoVD and don't think its bad for our hobby. just to keep this thread on track...

Actually, Buttercup, I was vocal in other threads regarding the BoVD. I was wrong, and so were many on the other side. The book caused no controversy, and I am glad I was wrong. I looked at it, and also saw that the 'Blood! Blood!' crowd is wrong too. The book is really rather bland. Hey, so I don't buy one product from Monte Cook, big deal. Games Workshop has put out much more vile and evil stuff, which I do use in my games. Those first Realms of Chaos books blow the covers off the Book of 'Vile' Darkness.

Never count on me to be silent. I meant it when I said I was glad I was wrong about the book. Although the way some people (not Buttercup) jumped on anyone who voiced a concern was very appalling. Sometimes these boards get in a group mentality that borders on ridiculous. Opinions welcome only if they go with the grain.

I would have loved to have seen a radiant, respendant, iconic hero of goodness bathed in a glowing aura that was really evil. I'd prefer a book that was as equally interested in exploring the real evil: deception. Body piercings, tatoos and a focus on excretions in all their various forms is only part of the definition of the word vile.

Normally art doesn't influence my decisions concerning purchasing gaming material, but this is a rare abberation.

Actually, I pretty much liked the art (: but, also as someone who only flipped through it at the FLGS, didn't see the discussion of evil and its archetypes like AEG's Evil. I guess my beef is that the book had all these **specific** ideas that wasn't presented in a cohesive whole. I haven't been in the Dungeon and Dragon magazine loop, but haven't seen any precedence for the various classes, items, and spells presented in the BoVD. Myself, I would have devoted a section to each of the dark gods and dark races (plus Vecna!) fleshing them out to "plug in" to the generic D&D world. Each section would discuss the god or race, its influence over the world (and why it hasn't taken it over yet!), its prestige classes, and magic items associated with it. Or maybe I just missed that part.

well, there is a discussion of evil archtypes, and while there isn't really a section for dark gods (except for some little write ups), there is a section for demon princes and archdevils, their goals, symbols, cults etc... and more than half of them have PrCs dedicated to their service...

but i like the toolkit feel of the book, what you call the lack of a cohesive whole....

look at me, i'm turning into the nightfall of the BoVD... sigh...
