Breaking the Law

Ovinomancer

No flips for you!
My character has a follower (he is a cleric of the god of knowledge) who was given a quest from his god to recover an item. Don't know what it is, don't know what it does. So my follower goes about researching this item and finds out that he needs access to a specific temple that houses the ancient records to locate it. Problem is that his church has refused him access. No reason given, just refused. My GM isn't being unfair, its actually my character's fault. Way back, before my follower joined, we sorta stole a very ancient book from the temple. Since then, they have probably figured out who did it, and they probably know who my follower follows. They haven't sought retribution against us, but that is for other reasons.

My assests are as follows:
My follower is LG, me not so.
I have the ear of the queen, but would rather not use it.
I have rather sneaky friends, but, again, my follower is LG.
Don't want to use Divinations, would be cheating (God of Knowledge)
I haven't been restricted from the church (at least I haven't been told)
I have a good bit of money at hand. (50K)

The church and the god are rather different in this campaign. Think greek gods, not perfect, just godly. The church does what it expects the gods want them too, but doesn't check to see if they are getting it right all the time. The church doesn't like me, but the god does.

I'm stuck without a good idea/plan. Can ya'll help me out?

You have a lot of money. Churches need money. I can't see a church turning down a goodly sum of cash as a "donation" to help facilitate your follower accessing the records. If they're a wealthy chruch that doesn't really need the money, this may offend them more, however.

Have you tried returning their book, you crook? :p If it doesn't still exist, maybe you could buy a new one? Probably costs a lot less than 50,000... Of course, there will also likely be a whopping late fee! :D

Impossible. Now, if only you had a holocaust cloak and a wheelbarrow...

I say do something hairbrained. I'm thinking lousy disguises and fake accents, getting the info by exploiting false pretenses, and duping your follower into helping you without understanding what he's really doing. It probably won't work, but at least you'll have a good story to tell your grandchildren...

Returning the book would be bad. They didn't know they had it, and it tells how the gods were duped into allowing the world to be run by demons and devils. Not really reading you want to get out.

Why is who your follower follows an issue?

So if they don't know they had it, how will they know (a) you took it in the first place, & (b) what it was if you offer them a new donation (book or cash) in replacement?

Because he follows me, and the church doesn't like me.

Another character in the party sorta let the cat out of the bag by allowing the head cleric from a different city to see the book. News travels.

What is your alignment? Are you opposed to stealing? If not then why not just yoink it and lie to your follower?

Why no Div spells? Since when is a God of Knowledge opposed to Divinations?

Is there any reason you couldn't convince somebody else to "research" the information for you without openly saying as much? It doesn't appear to be that difficult an obstacle to me.

I don't know your campaign but you could try something radical: The Truth :)

Could you go to the church and say "Yeah, my friends and I took the book. It was for the greater good, take my word for it. Is there some way besides returning the book that I can make it up to you?"

If they won't go for it, you can always take the moral high ground later. LG churches hate that :D
