buckler question

A bow user doesn't suffer a penalty due to the extra weight because a bowman isn't swinging anything around. He is just holding the the bow.

Using a two-handed weapon with a buckler on one arm would still penalize the guy due to the added weight and the fact that it'll thrown the swing off a little.. hense -1 attack penalty.

I'm not convinced, I think this is one of those things that's not in the book because it doesn't need to be ... the only mention two-weapon fighting becuase it is affected.

why would it throw your arm off? it's suppossed to be securely strapped to arm and not move or slip ... (at least I thought it wasn't).

just my opinion on the matter, and I'll probably rule that it doesn't give a -1 attk (unless it gets ruled otherwise).

Man, this was a *horrible* thread when it came up last time.

I *think* it was decided that you would have the -1 penalty on the attacks with the buckler on one arm (this got really ugly).

I wonder if Artoomis has anything on this?

Ha! #1 on his list :)

1. Buckler w/two handed weapon.

My Best Advice: Allow someone using a weapon with both hands to have a buckler strapped to his arm with no penalty, but no AC bonus from the buckler.

The Rules: You may use a buckler with a bow with no penalty and you still get the AC bonus from the buckler. If you use two weapons, you get a –1 to all your attacks and get no AC bonus for the buckler. There is no rule for two-handed weapons with a buckler.

The Sage: (In an e-mail)You can't use a buckler with a two-handed weapon. (Many DMs allow this, if you're one on them just use the two-weapon attack penalty.)

In any case, you don't get the buckler's AC bonus on any round when you attack with the hand that holds the buckler (even if you use a ranged weapon such as a bow).

Other WotC/former WotC opinions:

Argument For: It’s not a big deal.It allows some extra flexibility. The rules seem to allow using a buckler with a two-handed weapon, but precisely how that's done is unclear. It is, after all, strapped to your arm - what happens when you pick up the two-handed weapon? That's the question, and the best(?) answer is to allow it but with no bonus from the shield.

Argument Against: It can be abused – you could possibly have a magic buckler with special properties that would still be active even when you don’t get the AC bonus. The rules don't say you can use a buckler with a two-handed weapon, so you can't.

You know, the only problem I have with this...

The Rules: You may use a buckler with a bow with no penalty and you still get the AC bonus from the buckler. If you use two weapons, you get a –1 to all your attacks and get no AC bonus for the buckler. There is no rule for two-handed weapons with a buckler.

...is when you consider this...

In any case, if you use a weapon in your off-hand, you don’t get the buckler’s AC bonus for the rest of the round.

Really, if you are using a two-handed weapon, you are using your "off-hand", and your "off-hand" is what is holding the buckler. Anyway, that's my sticking point on this.

Ah, that's the Sage for you :)

Like I said, this got REAL ugly the last time (I avoided that thread like a diseased mongoose with fleas and lust in its eyes), so that's all I can offer on the subject :)

Whoops - you're right.

What was your point again? :) Trust me I'm strictly neutral good on this one, I just don't know what your stance is for sure.

Edit: Nevermind, I read your first post. That's how I would handle it too.

LOL OK. Let's try this again. :D

The PH clearly states that if you use a weapon in your off-hand, you lose the AC bonus from the buckler. If you are using a two-handed weapon, you are using your "off-hand", and your "off-hand" is what is holding the buckler. That's the proverbial "brick wall" that I keep bumpin' into. :)

Can you have a buckler on both arms?

The buckler doesn't allow the bonus to AC if you use the weapon to attack.

What would keep you from using two bucklers and then having a better AC if you wanted to use a Defensive Action?

Just the -1 to attack with either hand, right?

Aluvial

Hmm, I don't know. Yeah, I suppose you can. Why not?
