But...why not GURPS Munchkin?

So...it's OK to stereotype all of us, then? SJG knows exactly what they're doing. Like I said, they could have led off with any other d20 product. John Wick also played the same joke with "What's That Smell?" It's basically these guys "rebelling against the Empire" of d20. Going after a corporate entity is one thing; making people who buy the product of that entity the butt of a joke is another.

ColonelH, I love d20 and D&D and 3E, and yet I don't have a problem with d20 Munchkin. There's nothing wrong with poking some fun at one's own hobby. So what if SJ wants to have his little joke (if in fact that's his intent)? It doesn't affect me or anyone else I know materially. Taking a pastime too seriously is not a good thing, just like taking most anything too seriously.

I know I seem very defensive about this. I'm actually a lot less concerned about it than I seem. I'm just quibbling a bit, because jokes like these are tired and pointless.

Being very serious about how you're not being too serious is rather ironic, you should realise.

But we're talking about SJG and Steve Jackson, so shouldn't they stick to something that they're good at? :D

You mean like Toon? That is also a SJGames product.

SJGames actually has several different product lines currently running. In Nomine, Toon and Chez Geek are just a couple of the examples.

If you look at their games web page, you will notice that Munchkin is given a separate area from GURPS or the other games.

SJGames is more than just the GURPS titles, and many of the other titles are humor based.

No, no, no; you want the other guy. He was the one saying game designers couldn't do comedy. I was implying that Steve Jackson couldn't design games. :p

I wanted to discuss it, and if one doesn't straight out say "look, I just want to talk about it, not crusade" then people always assume one is on a tirade. But, if you do say "look, this is no big deal, but I thought it worth discussing," you are told how ironic that is. Adults can discuss things without being grouped into mutually hostile camps.

See, this is one of the reasons trying to discuss anything on a message board can be a drag. I mean, frankly, don't you think that the fact we all come here daily to discuss a game might indicate we are taking the hobby itself too seriously? Conversely, if we come here daily and never take anything seriously, isn't there something strange in that? I come here because most of the folk are thoughtful and insightful, and one can get a good conversation going. But, you're correct; maybe my time is being wasted in taking all this very seriously. If I want to have an adult conversation, I have plenty of folk to talk to in real life. These boards should really be about discussing the hobby itself.

Yeah, you're right. Trying to discuss anything on a message board with or without qualifying it is just a pain in the butt.

EDIT: Like this - I'm not trying to be inflammatory. It's just that the more people who belong to a community, the more likely it is for there to be friction with people who think differently. That's not bad, but it can make things frustrating at times.

In my experience, unless it's on a completely non-controversial topic, this assertion usually fails for any online discussion that goes on for more than about 20 followups. :p

Well, I don't know about you, but _I_ come here to make jokes about masturbation, hijack threads, and similar stuff. :)

I'm not flaming you. Really. I'm just pointing out that if you're having to qualify your posts by saying you're not too defensive or not intending to insult, or whatever, that's usually a sign the discussion's gone on too long. When that happens, it's better to cut your losses and walk away, rather than trying to retrieve the situation.

I might also mention that in posting this, I'm violating my _own_ rule of "never explain, never complain". The things I'll do in a spirit of public-mindedness.

Quick! Scapel! Clamp! Sponge!

We're losing him! If that stick isn't removed frome the Colonel arse, he'll turn into a tax accountant and be unbearable to live with!:p
