Buying a Genesis

I'm looking to buy a Sega Genesis because I'm in love with the game King's Bounty. However, I know next to nothing about purchasing used gaming consoles. I looked on eBay and apparently there's more versions of the Genesis than the one I had as a kid. Can anyone offer any advice? I'd prefer not to get an emulator, as I like playing on my TV as opposed to my PC, but I'm not opposed to buying something other than a Genesis (assuming I can get the game to work).

Not that I would advise you to do anything illegal, but the Action Replay Max for the PS2 comes with a Genesis emulator. If you have a PS2, anyway, that's a possible option

Anyway, I think the different models of Genesis are just physical. They all play Genesis games. But then there were two add-ons for it, Sega CD and 32x. But those aren't needed.

There should be just one version of the core console. It might come in different shapes, one rectangular and one more square, but it's the same system.

Stuff like the Sega CD or Sega 32X are add-ons that you'd know if you needed. The Sega CDX -- a cute little compact system that looks like an old cassette player -- combines the functions of the core Genesis console and the Sega CD functionality.

I *do* have a PS2 . . . What is this "Action Replay Max" you speak of, and how can I get one? And will it play King's Bounty? I don't actually know a terrible lot about emulators.

As for my original question, I guess it was more along the lines of, how do I know if I'm getting a good system (if I'm buying it online) and, if I shouldn't buy it online, how/where should I buy it?

The responses bring up another question, though--if anyone has played both King's Bounty and Heroes of Might and Magic, how do they compare, play-wise? I'm very partial to the simple nature of King's Bounty. Edit: And I'd love to find more games like it, so if HoMM is comparable, that'd be beyond awesome.

Thanks for your help so far, all!

An action replay max is a 3rd party cheat device. Basically it's just a disk that you put in the PS2 instead of a game. Only instead of just cheats, it also will play mp3s, genesis games, divX movies.

Basically, you either burn the games to a cd-r, or put them on a usb drive. I haven't played it much, since I bought it to cheat at PS2 games, not play Genesis ones, but it works with every game I've tried it with.

Anyway, if you buy something online, if you use paypal, you can always file a complaint if you get a bad system. (If you buy from a seller that says it's working). But realistically, cart based systems don't really go bad that easily.

Anyway, here's a brief article on the relationship between the HoMM series and KB

It also mentions

"The 2001 PlayStation 2 title Heroes of Might and Magic: Quest for the Dragon Bone Staff is an enhanced remake of King's Bounty made by 3DO."
