Buying Feats in 3.X

I can see the argument for customization, but the problem I have with 'feat a level' is that I think if implemented, it would start to make one of the complaints by the 4e designers valid - that too much of your character's abilities were tied up in niggly piddly modifiers and details located opaquely in a feat list.
It's not BadWrongFun to have a Fighter who is different from every other Fighter in the universe. I don't agree with any of 4e's design philosophies, and this is far from an exception.

I would rather have a unique, customized, and interesting Norman warrior than "Generic Fighter 4182 with a longsword and scale mail".

I don't know who you think you are responding to, but I don't think it was me.

1) How many feats do you think you need to customize something? Given that stock fighters already get like 12 bonus feats, 'feat every level' would mean giving fighters 32 feats total by 20th level.
2) Over a certain number of feats, you are actually making characters more generic, since everyone can just choose 'everything'.
3) I thought I was very clear that I wasn't opposed to customization, but didn't think you needed 'feat every level' to achieve it?
4) I thought I was very clear on the fact that martial classes - like the fighter - are not harmed considerably by having longish lists of feats because they don't have the added complexity of spells to keep track of. I only strongly opposed 'feat every level' for spellcaster classes that are already getting new mall bonuses every level, and in fact suggested that with bonus feats my martial classes (Explorer, Fanatic, Fighter, Hunter, and Rogue) had evolved toward something not far from 'feat every level'. Over the course of 20 levels Explorers get like the equivalent of 12 bonus feats, plus the 7 general feats from 1:3, which is a total 19 feats - almost one a level plus an additional class feature. Over 20 levels, Hunters get just 6 feats, plus the 7 general feats, but also have 3 class features and 5 favored enemies. Rogues get 6 'bonus feats' (many of which would be used on unique class features and not feat), plus the 7 general feats, plus a slew of class features. Fighters get 16 bonus feats plus the 7 general feats, plus 3 class features, which means that they get more than a feat every level (two at 1st, 18th, 19th, and 20th). If you can't customize with 24 feats, then something is seriously wrong with your definition of customization.
However, I'm still short by 8 feats compared to the stock fighter under 'feat every level', and I don't have to worry about sorcerer's with 20 feats and a full spell list.
5) Who said anything about 'badwrongfun'? I'm just saying that I foresee that eventually having alot of feats is as bad as having lots of spells for slowing down play. Keeping track of all the different bonuses, combat options, and so forth can get really complicated.
6) Just what does being a 'Norman Knight' have to do with having any especially large number of feats? You can make a Norman Knight as is with a RAW human fighter using just the core. Heck, 'Norman Knight' is pretty darn generic, and if you mean to make it interesting then its going to require something other than feats.
