Calculating ECl

Ok, how exactly does this work? It has always confused me...

I don't want to kill my PCs.

I have 5 10th level PCs (an elven necromancer, human cleric of vecna, human rogue/shadowdancer/assassin, human monk and a half-orc barbarian/fighter) who have one cohort and 10 followers. They are also accompanied by 4 zombies, 2 medium and 2 large.

What would be the ECL of 3 4th level minotaur fighters be? Or perhaps an Ogre Mage and his pet Gray Render. Or an Ogre Mage and his troll cronies?

Any help here would be much appreciated.

I don't know; how many trolls.

You might find this useful.

I personally think your party will wax such easy encounters given thier numbers, many assistants, and my past experience with such things.

Since none of the opponents individually is as powerful as a party member, I'd reduce the EL (for the purpose of calculating experience) by one from the suggested. These are basically grunts to a party of that level.

ECL only applies to PCs.

A 4th level minotaur fighter: CR 8. Three of them: EL 11.

Ogra mage: CR 8. Gray render: CR 8. Both: EL 10.
