Can a Warlock use invocations in a grapple?

HIDEOUS BLOW

Least; 1st; Blast Shape

As a standard action, you can make a melee attack. If you hit, the target is affected as if struck by your eldritch blast (including any eldritch essence applied to the blast). This damage is in addition to any weapon damage that you deal with your attack, although you need not deal damage with this attack to trigger the eldritch blast effect.

So does someone using this ever actualy use their Eldrich Blast, or does it just affect someone they hit ?

See the section titled "Blast Shape or Eldritch Essence" on page 130 of Complete Arcane.

I wish Warlock were stronger, because as is they are class starving for feats. Every single feat they can get their hands on they need. They dont really have the space to take quasi useless Sudden Still for a once a day ability. I am in love with the idea of a melee warlock, but it seems to be non the the tea leaves for me.

Warlocks are plenty strong enough. And all classes are starved for feats, except Fighters and PsyWars... I play a Warlock and took Sudden Still spell at lvl 3 "just incase". And ya know what? I hope I never have to use it! LOL
