Can an axe be a good ranged weapon?

i have actually (briefly) played a character similar to this one. he died in the third fight when i messed up my math and he threw all of his axes (16, and yes i had a schematic of where they were carried) before the enemy closed. lev 3, bare handed wearing leather armor vs 2 ogres no improved unarmed feat. *squish* in hindsight i wish i would have taken a monk level just in case.

edit: to the point now, it was a blast. getting my "collection" into and out of uptight cities was the best part. " you hold 3, you take 3. monk, you are not carrying any weapons, here take these five."

I think getting classes as a Ranger would be very good in this instance, especially if your DM will let you take Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot for your starting Ranger feats (instead of Ambidexterity and Two-Weapon Fighting). The trade-off, of course, is the fact that you can't dual wield very well, but you can throw one axe pretty well.

Perhaps a fighter/ranger class combination is in order?

Neat character idea, good job man,

You're talking about the 'revised' ranger right? I guess one level of ranger and then the rest would be fighter (as he's not too woodsy)

I'd need: Point Bank,Precise shot, Rapid shot, 2weap, ambidex, quick draw. That'd allow the character to let loose 3 axes in one turn. That's alot of feats though and would be a 1ranger/5fight before having them all. Either it's going to be a 2handed person who throws, or a thrower who can be 2 handed also. Later on I'd most likely get far shot and what not.

If going from 1lv and up I'd have to start it w/amb+2weap as in the early levels most things only have 10 hp.

So your lv.3 guy died because he had no melee back up weapon? Or the fact that you took on 2 ogres?

thanks for posting too guys. really helped me hash this character out.

<~ Ave Rage btw. posted under brothers name :(

Sword and Fist has a feat called "Thow Anything" to hurl melee weapons.

Far shot would help.
Throwing weapon enchantment would help.

Cool Idea!

There's a couple of other feats that are just too cool not to consider.

Ranged Disarm: Make a disarm attack with a ranged weapon.

I mean, how cool is that? Buddy's got a big two-handed sword and he's coming for you -- CLANG! Your first axe knocks his sword flying and SCHUNK! Your second axe splits his forehead open. Heh, heh, heh.

Ranged Pin: Pin an opponent to a nearby wall with a ranged weapon.

This is the old "axe-into-the-cloak-into-the-wall" trick. So first you knock his sword away, then you pin him to the wall, and then you walk up and Fish Dance his face.

Now THAT's some cool hoo hah.

Look up information about the Franks. They had a signature axe (called a frank) that they would hurl at their enemies as they were closing. I've used this tactic a lot, and have several characters who do it, with an axe or with a spear.

Boy, that must have got confusing, though.

"Look out for that frank!" -- does that mean "Duck! cause there's an axe flying at your head!" or "Turn around cause there's a big guy running at you from behind?"

And if a Frank man says to a Frank woman, "Let's go make some little franks," what if she applies a whetstone inappropriately? Ow.

And what's funny is that these confused Frank people created France :) The Franks were named after their axes, and France was named after them. France is named after a variety of hand axe. :)

One quick comment on the lumberjack idea:

I'm currently playing a character who was a lumberjack by trade before being called into the service of Obad-Hai (he's a ranger/cleric). He always says a quick prayer to Obad-Hai before he takes anything from nature be it a tree or a rabbit for the stewpot.

That seems to keep the druids and such at bay. So far.
