Can you Really kill someone?

There is always true reincarnation and you get two rolls, don't lose a level and if both rolls are unacceptable, die and do it again.

as for ruling as a badger...nice image. But polymorph other will solve that problem right quick.

As for the spheres, you've got dieties that can raise, and its an artifact. I can't imagine most assassin's carrying one around. Since you can't kill someone (at least easily so far) it makes assasinations (of high level or influential people) pretty pointless.

Maybe the assassin guild has the sphere or access to it though...

Kill target. Cast Soul Bind (PHB). Put gem in a Glove of Storing (DMG). Put glove on another willing target (let's assume these are religious assassins and they have some fanatical followers).

High-level Sorcerer/Wizard uses Teleport (not Teleport without Error) and tries for a general locale, someplace they've never been. If they're really lucky, they die, taking the original target with them. If not, they're still probably lost, since they don't know exactly where they are. Cast Imprisonment from this unknown location (don't do it at night, since you don't want to have any astronomical knowledge accidentally give it away).

Quickly Teleport (without error this time) to your secret headquarters where a high-level Bard uses Modify Memory to supplant the knowledge of where you've been with something else.

et cetera, et cetera...

The key is to layer the obfuscation so that a single Miracle/Wish won't even get you close to the original target or might even yield false information.

As someone mentioned above, deities are really the only ones who cannot be stopped by mortal magics, which just makes sense.

Slay, resurrect, slay again, resurrect again, slay again, resurrect again, repeat until resurrection fails.

- Kidnap him

- Brainwash him extensively, maybe using magic, so he would never want to come to life any more. You must be willing to return, so if the sould doesn´t want to, no spell will help.

The problem with this is the target gets to know who is rezz'ing him in 3e. It might work once or twice on that target, but he'd have to be a complete idiot to fall for it more than twice.

Oh, you're right, then this doesn't really help. :)

Hmmm... can you intercept the soul on its way through the astral plane? ;)

Flesh To Stone, then Disintegrate and scatter the dust across the various planes?

Honestly, it's easier to just set up your cosmology to allow for permanent death. It's far too difficult to stay dead otherwise.

what about instead of killing killing him, make him turned to stone or paralyzed or hell in a coma that can't be gotten out of, heck soap operas do it all the time why can't we!

Nah, if you scatter the dust it's too easy to find some of it.

Here's my solution:

Subvert the heir to the throne. Kill the king. Resurrect him, and lock him in the deepest dungeon. The crown prince mourns the loss of his dearly departed, explains that the resurrection failed because the king didn't want to return, and he stays dead.
