Can you Really kill someone?

Off the top of my head...toss into a pit full of Wight's and have the body drained completely...then kill the undead form that raises?

Seems to me you could easily argue that this would "eat" the soul.

As for disintegrating someone and scatterng the ashes true ressurection shoots holes in that theory. Why? because true res doesn't require the body, only that the person died withing 10yrs per caster level and wants to return.

As for hiding, I can't think of why wish/miracle won't bring the object to you.

Ki Ryn, it is easier to set up the game that way, or manipulate politics to keep it from happening. I was just wondering though.

In the Epic Level Handbook there is an a Epic organization called the Garrote ("perfectionists in the fine art of extermination").

The fee is the target's EL multipled by the same number plus 4, multiplied by 1,000 gp. For permanent removal, add 25%.

The head of the guild is a leShay Assassin called Anifer Unglum. She has a cloak whose interior opens to a void dimension.

"When the remains of a victim are sent to her for utter removal, she allows her cloak to fall over the boddy and speaks a command word. When the cloak is pulled free, the body is gone forever, beyond even the recall of greater gods."

hmmm, good stuff. Artifact level, but good stuff.

Anybody figure a way to do so without an artifact though? I'm wracking my brain on this one.

If you really have to kill him (and thus can't do things like turn him to stone and hide him somewhere) bring him to a plane with a much accelerated time rate. Kill him until hes D-E-D dead.

Now, assuming you can keep a Cleric from casting True Ressurection right away (which really shouldn't be hard unless they were waiting for you or something) and assuming that the plane's time factor is accelerated enough, his bodily remains will be too decayed rather quickly.

Even True Ressurection requires the recipient to have died within 10 yrs. a level. Obviously using planes like this is hazardous (when time is moving that fast, staying a few minutes too long could mean losing a year or more back in your home world) but when you are trying to kill someone and make them stay dead, expect risks.

On the other hand, if your cosmology is anything like Planescape cosmology, head to the plane where said King/Queen/Prince/Really really important guy has gone now that they are dead. Find their Petitioner body. Kill again.

No more need to worry about Ressurection. :D

Other than the don't kill just disable and hide methods. Since he has to be willing to be able to come back,I'd say the best bet might to just really conivnce the king that if he comes back really bad things would happen to his loved ones. Like they might disapear in the flesh to sotne, non detection, extra dimensional space style. Of course this would take some realy talented convincing, like maybe a demonstration of what would happen to his kids, but hey when your really high level you can do some crazy stuff.

This is still sorta in game plot reasons, but you can back it up with rules, and skill checks like diplomacy.

Hold a big BBQ...

...and feed them to a Barghest... until it sticks.

From the Barghest entry in the SRD:

Feed (Su): When a barghest slays a humanoid opponent, it can feed on the corpse, devouring both flesh and life force, as a full-round action. For every 8 HD or levels a barghest consumes, it gains 1 Hit Die. Feeding destroys the victim’s body and prevents any form of raising or resurrection that requires part of the corpse. A wish, miracle, or true resurrection spell can restore a devoured victim to life, but there is a 50% chance that even such powerful magic will fail.

That's why I said "Turn-To-Stone" and then disintegrate. Petrified is not dead, and thus cannot be resurrected.
