Can you trip as an AoO?

I can't find anything in the rules about this. Has there been a clarification/sage ruling on this question?

You can do anything with an AoO that you can do with an attack, including trips, disarms, grapples, sunders, etc.

Unfortunately you can't sunder an item with an AoO, which I find kind of bizarre myself.

Although if I had my way, you wouldn't be able to sunder, period. Or disarm. Not until you'd reduced the other guy to 0 hit points, anyway.

Yup, but not as part of a Charge, Full Attack Action, or AoO.
Table 8-4 includes a footnote mark beside actions that may be part of Charge, FAA, or AoO, and give them an action type of "Varies" - Trip, Grapple, and Disarm.

Strike a Weapon is a standard action, and lacks the footnote mark.

Alternatively, they figured that someone getting four attempts to disarm you in a round wasn't as big a problem as someone getting four attempts to whittle away the hit points of your expensive magic sword before you have a chance to react...

Which would make it, in technical terms, a "rule".
