Can't access basic Windows programs

XP has a tendency to self destruct and require a reinstall ever year or two. Usually this has to do with installing and uninstalling programs, Windows updates, and so on. I've had my machine for about five years now and I've had to reinstall Windows four times during that time. It could just be that your Windows install finally decided to flake and its time to rebuild. As far as I know, other than nagging you that your copy of Windows isn't authentic, Microsoft doesn't deliberately sabotage their own software.

Other things that could be wrong - a virus, spyware, or even the virus protection software you're using. You might try turning it off to see if the problems go away. You might be surprised.

Many "Windows-only" programs will work on Linux using WINE.

Only the the program doesn't use Windows Scripting Host, MSDAC or third party libraries. Really, I was never able to run anything more complicated that Solitaire. It just isn't worth the bother for me. Also, if you install Windows DLLs on Linux without actually installing the system aren't you violating the EULA?

I have just reinstalled after 14 months of continuous use, but before that the periods were much shorter, three to six months. I only managed to survive that long because I didn't install that many apps (especially games). However, installing Neverwinter Nights was the nail in the coffin. For some reason my DVD drive refused to work at speeds faster than 8x and I had to reinstall to get it right.

I believe XP will just tend to nag and prevent certain downloads and updates from MS's site from working.

Windows Vista does have a reduced functionality mode.

It sounds like you may have accidentally unchecked "Accessories and Utilities" when you were removing MSN Explorer and Messenger. Just check it again and it should add them back in.

This was the problem. Unfortunately without an XP disk I can't reinstall, so I'm using this as an excuse for me to save up and buy a new computer. I'll just have to listen to quiet music for a while.

Just buy Windows and those hassles go away. If you don't like the idea of paying Microsoft their money then choose from one of the numerous free Operating Systems out there today (Fedora, Ubuntu, CentOS, etc). There are alternatives out there for people who choose not to support Microsoft.

Also...format and reinstall your computer entirely EVERY YEAR. Consider it an oil change.
