Castles & Crusades - Who interested in a PBEM?

Turanil

First Post
I am currently playing in a Conan free-form game (i.e.: players only roleplay, DM handles all mechanics of which we don't know anything), and I much like it. What I see is that free-form is excellent for a PBEM, so I thought: why not run a C&C pbem? I want it to be pbem (seems to last longer than pbp?), but the ongoing story will be regularly posted either on the Playing the Game or Story Hour forum (don't know what's best, open to suggestions).

So whoever is interested in a C&C pbem?

The Rules: Castles & Crusades free-form. This first means that I am open to concepts out of the box. If someone wants to customize a class, or use a new one from some netbook out there, I am willing to work with the player to make what he wants. Then, the game will be about a story, not about game mechanics and dice resolution on emails (yet you will know what your PC abilities will be as you will create your character). Game begins at 3rd level. XP are handled as I see fit, not by the book.

Houserules: There will be some twist on the rules that I am not telling you right away. There is for instance something peculiar about magic, but only one who plays a spellcaster will know it as he learns more about magic over the course of adventures... Magic is not a subject that everyone knows after all, but something shrouded in superstition and mystery. Otherwise, one of the houserules is: allegiances (ala d20 modern) instead of alignments. Another is: use of Sanity points as in CoC d20 and UA 3e!

The Setting: This is the setting I am working on, and that you will discover as your characters adventure in it. Basically, it's a setting inspired from medieval Europe; in fact to get the right feel of it, just read the first book of the Elenium by David Eddings ("The Diamond Throne").

So the world is this:

-- To the north the Highlands inspired by Scotland from medieval age. Many clans, and druidism as the prevalent faith.

-- To the south, a land of rolling hills with a feudal culture inspired by France / UK from the middle ages. A single monotheirstic faith largely inspired by the Chrisitan faith / Helene Church of David Eddings, with magic-using clerics and Church knights.

-- No gnomes and halflings, despite they exist in the setting. Preferably humans, but open to suggestions anyway if it fits my concept. Dwarves are like swiss mercenaries in this setting. Elves are either recluse spirit folk (so no PCs) or evil and reviled outcasts (so go for problems in human lands).

-- Arcane magic exist but isn't widespread, and tend to be shun by the common folk, as black magic is hunted by the Church. Wizards are tolerated but often must have a license and are controlled...

-- Cosmology: the most important thing is that the Shadow world overlaps the material world. It is an everchanging world of magic and chaos, shaped by the desires of those who inhabit it, but also of the wizards and sorcerers who draw on it for their magic. Alas, in the past a race of dark necromancers corrupted the Shadow world which is now a nightmare world in many places.

-- Creatures: no weird stuff such as beholders, mimics, yrtak (*rolleyes*) or what not. Only creatures you could expect in medieval legends, such as trolls, demons, undead, etc.

Players will learn more of the specifics according to what their characters are supposed to know.

Anyone interested?

Whats the starting power level of PCs in the game? I am at a time-deficit currently, so what your restrictions on email replies, specifically timeliness of such replies? I like what youve mentioned of the setting, sounds interesting. Does this world have a name yet?

Some specifics (will be edited / updated as time goes by):

-- Rate of play: minimum expected is once per week. Depending on circumstances (players seem willing to post a lot, and I have time at my disposal) it may be several times per week.

-- Characters begin at 3rd level. 3rd level is the commoner's average level, for a person in his/her thirties with normal experience and ambition. Then, only the more ambitious and gifted will rise above that. Of course, most commoners are tradesmen or men-at-arms (very simple classes of my own) rather than wizards and the like. So PCs are in their late twenties early thirties, with only casual everyday life experience and academic studies.

-- Clerics are priests of the One True God, not a combo of fighting abilities plus spellcasting. To play a combo you should rather opt for a multiclass wizard (don't need to care for religion) / warrior type. By the way, multiclassing is handled as in d20/3e not AD&D 2e.

-- Long time ago, the now defunct Nakmirhites (race of necromancers mentioned above) created two slaves races from warping humans. The dumb and aggressive orcs, and the passive and sturdy "half-humans". Now, while some half-orcs are born from an unfortunate encounter between an orc and human, many are actually born from two normal humans. One parent probably had an orc among his ancestors, whose genetics randomly resurfaced in that individual. Or maybe it's a curse for past misdeed of an ancestor or a punishment for a sinful parent?

-- No monks you know of. And in any case no shaolin martial artists.

Only if I can play a Paragon Curst Were-Mimic Half-Illithid Half-Black Pudding Kobold Illusionist/Shadowdancer/Oozemaster.

Otherwise... I'd be bored. ;)

Hehe. Actually, I'll think about it. Not sure yet.

Sure, sounds interesting. I have a character that I developed for serleran's go at a pbp game a while back, and although I'm not sure if it fits your setting, it's the best set of stat's I've rolled in ten years, so I'll give it a shot! Also, playing Cha 5 Paladin has its interesting moments. ;)

However, I'd be happy to roll up something more appropriate if poor Hakon doesn't fit.

Background: In the seventh year after the crowning of the young king, a despairing young maid of noble blood was abandoned by her family into the care of a remote monastery, the victim of a brutal and nameless crime. Well-paid to ensure the girl’s comfort and their own silence, the brother monks cared for her during her pregnancy with soft words, buried her after her untimely death with whispered prayers, and looked upon the monstrosity she had birthed in silence. It is unknown, even now, why the Brother Superior chose to raise the young creature rather than expose it on the barrens. Yet raise young Hakon they did, and he grew in stature and promise beyond the curse of his parentage. In time, he left the monastery and travelled the world, a champion to those oppressed by the evil that had shaped him. Hiding his course mein behind hood and armor, he earned the name Hakon Helm.

I might be interested in this Turanil. My own C&C campaign will be switching to PBEM soon (as I am in the process of moving from San Francisco to Dublin). I'd be interested in playing in someone else's campaign, for a change. Running one C&C PBEM campaign, and playing in another one, might give me my necessary 'C&C fix' for the next few months ...
:D

If I do play, I would be interested in playing a human wizard or illusionist. A dwarf bard is also a possibility (assuming that combo is okay).

Turanil -- what method for generating character stats would you prefer (4d6, best 3; 3d6; etc.)?

I think I'll roll up a PC.

Well hell, Ill make time for it. Please give us the rolling method, Ill hook something up. Level 3, I will probably be a Cleric, pending a changes you make to the class that I may or may not like.
