Father Spec is standing at the edge of the pit, uncertain if he has ever jumped in armour before. The elderly cleric's two feet are together and he is pumping his arms to get himself ready to leap across the small opening. It is then that he realizes the battle is over, as the clashing of weapons ceases and there is a sudden, almost oppressive silence in the narrow corridor, only poorly lit by his glowing mace. At least he doesn't need to cross it at this time. He lets out a sigh of relief, and dabs his nose with his handkerchief.

He turns to anyone who will listen. "Do we continue after them, then? Or maybe check out these rooms filled with debris? There have been two of them."

He looks at the one beside him, holding up the mace. to get better illumination.

Fulgrim steps into the dogleg, but faces north. He calls out to the rest of the party, "I don't know exactly what's going on with the rest of you, but I felt obliged to report that something just set off the alarm warding I placed after we camped."

The mage tucks his warhammer into the loop on his belt and draws out the crystal focus that connected him to his ancestors. Hearing Spec's suggestion, Fulgrim responded, "Or check the two rooms we bypassed before heading this way. We have clear indications that something is behind us."

Updated Map
Notes:
- Red Xs are rooms within our current branch that we have yet to investigate.
- The red circle is the area that was warded by Fulgrim's alarm spell, which was just triggered.
- Question: Which way does the corridor turn that the kobold fled down? Given the layout, I am assuming south, but don't want to map on assumption. Marked with a ? for now.

OOC: The corridor (that Kobold 3 turned down) heads south. Also, there is a corridor that starts 10' west of Roscoe's position on the map, and it, too, heads south. Neither Roscoe or Colden is positioned to see what is down that corridor, but I think it reasonable that both of them could see well enough to be aware that there's a gap in the wall.

Colden pauses as Roscoe raises his hand, looking back at the others on the far side of the pit he pauses to catch his breath.
"Maybe we should check the areas behind us," he suggests. "Our foes may have ways of flanking us and we need a plan to deal with that elf. Actually, now that I think of it, maybe we should press on before it can recover whatever spells it can cast?"

Guran frowns. "I dislike leaving unexplored rooms behind us. We can't let those enemies who know this maze better than we do lure us unawares into more and worse traps than they just did, what with that pit there. I'm for going back and exploring methodically."

OOC: Guran ain't afraid of no DC 5 pit trap: his STR (Athletics) bonus is 5, so he cannot roll below a 6 even on a Natural 1.

As Colden speaks, it's not fully clear that Father Spec is listening. He is interested in the two nearest 'x' areas on the map; he is unaware of the top two; and he believes as long as they pursue the caster within eight hours, there is no need to rush. But he seems distracted. Father spec hangs his mace on his belt hook, and casts light on his helm, which causes the illumination to fade on the weapon. As the light above his head goes, on, it is as if he has had a great idea.

""Ooh! ooh ooh," he expostulates. His shoulders have started bouncing. "We have to try something. Quickly! This is for research. Spec turns around and starts bouncing down the corridor, towards the area which had had the silent spell cast on it -- what, 30 seconds ago now? He believes the caster hasn't been hit, and so it may be that the effect is still present. "I've always wanted to find out something..." he begins and then, he steps into the area within the spell's effect, and turns and tries to speak.

Is there sound?

[sblock=If there is not (and the spell is active)]"- - -" says Spec, until he pokes his head out of the area. " - and so we can see if the effect is purely illusory or if it actually deadens all sound passing through it. Wait here." He's grinning broadly, and he bustles to the other end of the corridor, to the far end of the spell's area of effect." In the diminished light the part can see the illuminated Spec just beyond the bend, calling out to them at the far end of the narrow hallway. He can hear his own voice, and he wants to know if the sound of his voice travels through the silence effect, or if all sound stops dead.

Can he be heard?[/sblock]
[sblock=If there is (and it is not)]The disappointment on his face is instant. It is as if he has lost a beloved family pet. "Grump," he says. Actually saying the word. "Never mind. Pehaps we'll have the opportunity to try again. I can't believe I let that opportunity slip." He scratches his nose. "I'm fine with anything. Shall we check where the alarm went off?"[/sblock]

Spec performs his experiment. No sound emanates from inside the sphere of silence until Spec sticks out his head and natters away about illusory effects, and then he can be heard. When Spec traverses the corridor to its northern end and attempts speech from outside the silenced area, Spec can hear his own voice, but no sound passes through the magically silenced area. No one on the far end of the corridor can hear him.

The walls in Stonefast provide a layer of intrigue to Spec's experimentation. What if the spell were to be attempted out in the open air? Would sound then be able to arc above and around the sphere? Perhaps further experimentation is necessary.

Yes, we should head back to the intersection and search room by room. I wonder if the beast is aligned with the local Orcs and Kobolds over here? Anyhow, We need to mark the place with the trap, they will activate and hid it again for sure.
Roscoe says as he stays next to Father Spec, he needs the light.
