[CC Crew] Determining CR of a Template

How do you guys figure the modified CR or templated creatures? Do you simply use the normal CR-finding technique from Dragon, or do you have some special formula?

I'm whipping up a few templates for a D20 conversion of Shadowrun I'm doing, and am having trouble with this bit.

I generally just add the template to a CR 1 creature, the caluclate it normally and substract one. So far, no-one has complained...

I wouldn't do that with every template, though... such as my planar ruler template.

Of course not, on occassion you just have to wing it and make a guess

Some templates would multiply the stats of the base creature, and not just add to them, so the best thing to do is make some extreme examples, calculate their CRs, and work a formula backwards.

Example:

1 CR => 4 newCR
12 CR => 18 newCR

newCR = CR + 3 + (CR/4)
