"Centered on you" effects when you are > Medium

Zaruthustran

The tingling means it’s working!
Some spells (such as Energy Vortex from complete divine) have an effect of "20' radius centered on you". How does this work when the caster is Large? Or Colossal?

If the effect occurs in the center of you space, then a Large caster... what, affects himself? Or the 20' radius changes to, effectively, a 10' radius?

What about a bigger caster, where a 20' radius literally centered on the caster won't even get beyond the caster's space?

I'm guessing that the the example effect extends 20' from the edges of the caster's space, but just want to confirm with ENWorld rules scholars.

"The point of origin of a spell is always a grid intersection."

Bigger creatures just have more grid intesections to pick from. (shrug)

Very sorry to say, but if the spell is a "20' radius centered on you" and you are the 20' radius, then i think you are SOL. It would start form the corner nearest your center [your choice of the four if your center is not an intersection...like if you are you are 15' x 15'].

Maybe there is some judicial legislation from the sage or the latter rule FAQ-ups to help you out..

edit

Now for the wording on your particular spell, the range, area and text do not match so you may be good.

ENERGY VORTEX
Evocation [Acid. Cold, Fire, elecrtricity, or Sonic]
Level: Cleric 4, druid 4
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: 20 ft.
Area: All creatures within a 20-ft.-radius burst centered on you
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Reflex half
Spell Resistance:Yes

When you cast energy vortex, you choose one of five energy types: acid, cold, fire, electricity, or sonic. A blast of that energy type bursts in all directions from you, dealing 1d8 points of damage +1 point per caster level (maximum +20) to nearby creatures other than you. If you are willing to take the damage yourself, you deal twice as much damage. You don't get a Reflex save, but spell resistance applies, as do any resistances and immunities you have to the energy type.

House Rule Time!

How about this house rule? You just change the radius effect so that you affect an equal volume that you do not occupy then if you were medium and had the same effect going?

Requires someone who remembers high school math, but thats about it. That way a Colosal crit could have a 10' radius effect going on it that just covers its skin and a fraction of an inch beyond (largely inneffective unless A) unarmed attacks are made against it B) you are grappling it [a colosal crit, remember ;)], etc).

Elsewise, that screws over what affects you can use when your, say, a dragon trying to solo the party. (especially since my favorite epic damage spells are the "radius centered on caster" type)
