Changing Characters...

For campaigns I have participated in players are only allowed to introduce a new character if the one they are currently using dies. And they have to start at first level (no matter what the other players level).

However, often times we run adventures that are just one of and people can mix characters between these as much as they like.

However one thing I can't stand is people giving up on a character as follows. giving up on a character because they lose a limb, get polymorphed or so forth.... I would much rather the player roleplayed the changes (even if they do sometimes come with penalties or hindrances), simply because a character suffer a penalty of some sort is not what I consider a good reason for giving a character up.

i've noticed this in alot of dm's. they only hate character changing when a character has a perfectly good reason to quit adventuring. ie two weapon fighting guru loses an arm and quits to a life of drinking or some such thing or mighty paladin gets turned into a dog. when a character is changed in such an extreme manner i think it's perfectly reasonable for him to quit, not everyone has the "adventure until i am dead" mentality. playing a dog sucks, i've tried it. smite evil does not make the thought of biting (and therefore tasting) an ogre any easier for a nobility raised paladin character to handle.

as a dm i let people change freely, however if i need a character to resolve a storyline, he is now mine until that storyline is resolved.

If a player wants to roleplay retiring his character because of some incapacity or injury, then I have no problem with that.

If a player wants to retire his character because he sucks and he doesn't want to play a gimpy character with a drawback...then bleh, I can't stand that. Suck it up, play your character.
