Changing magic

Good day; I'm running a mix of AU and D&D 3.5, and for the casters, I've decided to get rid of assigned slots for spells known. Instead, I'm going to make all the spells static - the power level and range of the spell is going to remain exactly as it was when the caster first got it. Thus, fireball will always do 5d6 damage, and Magic Missile will have a range of exactly 110 feet, with only one missile, ever.

Of course, now it means that wizards will be able to lay down whatever spells they know, when they feel it's appropriate. What do you guys think? Am I nuts? (I have no sorcerers).

A couple of side things: Wizards will cipher their spellbooks, and need their spellbooks whenever casting Complex or Exotic spells (not Simple).

So they completly memorise the simple ones, and cast then whenever? At will? And the rest is cast from their books? At will?

Yes (until they run out of slots - they still have to power the spells). Basically, think Sorcerer with wizard spells per day and no limits on his ability to learn new spells. But the spells never improve based on caster level.

Interesting concept. What are you hoping to accomplish with this variant? And what exactly differentiates simple, complex, and exotic spells?
