I started out with the Red Box Basic D&D and quickly graduated to AD&D 1e. I made the transition to 2e AD&D and played haphazardly until I graduated High School. I tried to get gaming going as a college Freshman, but nothing lasted, and I dropped D&D for around 5 years. Come approx 1997 and I was out of college, found a new group, and started 2e again. When 3e came out, we delayed a couple months to finish up elements of our 2e campaign, but eventually threw in the towel and converted fully. Last year we finally made the switch to 3.5e...most of the changes I've been exposed to are for the better. Some I disagreed with (switching up spells), but most were for the positive, IMHO.
I've always been into other game rules, though, and love to play alternative RPGs. I've dabbled, over the years, with Robotech RPG, FASA's Star Trek RPG, MERP, Call of Cthulu, and a few others. I own (but have not played) Star Wars D20, Heavy Gear RPG, and Mechwarrior 1e (note, if you count Battletech as an RPG, that far outstrips my D&D purchases yearly!).
Damon.
