Changing to another edition

I started out with the Red Box Basic D&D and quickly graduated to AD&D 1e. I made the transition to 2e AD&D and played haphazardly until I graduated High School. I tried to get gaming going as a college Freshman, but nothing lasted, and I dropped D&D for around 5 years. Come approx 1997 and I was out of college, found a new group, and started 2e again. When 3e came out, we delayed a couple months to finish up elements of our 2e campaign, but eventually threw in the towel and converted fully. Last year we finally made the switch to 3.5e...most of the changes I've been exposed to are for the better. Some I disagreed with (switching up spells), but most were for the positive, IMHO.

I've always been into other game rules, though, and love to play alternative RPGs. I've dabbled, over the years, with Robotech RPG, FASA's Star Trek RPG, MERP, Call of Cthulu, and a few others. I own (but have not played) Star Wars D20, Heavy Gear RPG, and Mechwarrior 1e (note, if you count Battletech as an RPG, that far outstrips my D&D purchases yearly!).

Never really played 1e unless you count computer games. I got started with AD&D around the time 2e came out.

I played 2e for years but ultimately dropped it because I couldn't stand the mechanics any more. Other games I've discovered in the meantime were far more to my liking.

3e brought me back, though I was already quite burned out on it when 3.5 came out. 3.5 re-invigorated my interest. It wasn't just the changes made in the core books - I also like the supplements far better than most 3.0 ones.

Well, I loved 1E and loved 2E even more. I think the times I stopped playing was because of lack of players. Moving from Okinawa, back to rural Indiana, I got my brothers friends into it (well, they were already playing, just didn't have some of the rules down very good). I think 3e has been the only addition I've gotten mad and actually quit for awhile with. I think 3e is very rules oriented, and is kinda less imaginative then the other editions. I know thats because 1E and 2E had to have so many house rules, but I still really miss it. It seems that since we've been playing 3E, theres always a rules argument, and so many frickin options, classes.....blah. Kinda reminds me of playing Diablo or something.

Back when 2nd edition AD&D was released, I was only occasionally playing D&D. D&D had the advantage of a wide player base, and it was occasionally a good "default" for the game.

When 2nd edition was announced, I was hoping it would fix the "holes" in AD&D 1st edition (non-human race limits, etc). It was a bunch of half-measures. Rather than learning a new system, we just completely stayed away from D&D.

I moved away from D&D by the time 2nd edition AD&D was released. However, this not related to my opinion about 2nd edition. As a matter of fact, I think that, rules wise, it was an improvement, a small improvement, but still an improvement. However, I was sort of tired of D&D and more than willing to explore new games with the little time left I have for this kinds of things.

I returned to D&D in the last days of 2nd edition AD&D and I have a good opinion of that version of the game. When d20 D&D came out, I was hooked by the new possibilities, however, after running a game up to the seventh level and playing Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil, I found out that d20 is not my cup of tea. Since then, I am playing with the D&D Rules Cyclopedia and I am very happy with it, as it contains all I need in the amout of detail I like, and, best of all, in a single volume.

Just making an interesting note, here. Not complaining. But it is interesting how many people have mentioned D&D3, even though the topic of the thread specifically avoided mentioning/including it for discussion.

When AD&D 2E came out, I got it and liked it - it seemed to smooth some things out. I really liked what they did with clerics. But I also had friends who still played 1E and I also had characters from 1E and one thing I NEVER did was convert characters - so I played 1E and 2E both.

Then I was out of gaming for a while, until 3E came out and that brought me back in. I really liked 3E to the point where I don't think I'd play 1E or 2E ever again. I still didn't convert characters, though I did consider making a new version of old favorites (starting at first level). But ultimately, I just made all new characters for the games I played, and mostly, I DM'd.

Somewhere in there I played Basic D&D, but never really seriously, because I was well into AD&D by the time I got a regular group (in college).

I haven't played 3.5E, since that came out in my "dead period" (law school) which is about to end shortly... but I'm sure that's what I'll do when I start it up again...

Now I need to read all those books I've missed for the past three years... so when do we all convert to 4E?

just another interesting note:
the title of the thread says changing to another edition.

some people may feel 2000ed is D&D so they may include it as an edition change.

Interesting. Where the old D&D computer games based on 1e rules? I always thought those were based on 2nd edition rules. Pool of Radiance was 2nd edition, right? I don't remember there being monks, illusionists, or acrobats in that game. Unless there were older D&D computer games I'm not familiar with.
