Character class quotes

They've always been cheesy 
I always skim or skip the fluffy sections. That got me into trouble once in 3E. They snuck a crunchy rule into a section of a class descritpion that nearly always was pure fluff and I missed it.
I always skim or skip the fluffy sections. That got me into trouble once in 3E. They snuck a crunchy rule into a section of a class descritpion that nearly always was pure fluff and I missed it.
Most anything in a fantasy setting sounds goofy at some point or another. I think the class quotes stand out because so few players try to speak in character or in the context of the game when they perform actions. Nevertheless, I think the class quotes are less goofy than the sort of thing that players actually say around the table. 
Cleric: "Does anyone need a heal this turn?"
Fighter: "19! That gives me a 26! You suck it, kobold! That's 11 damage and he's marked if he's still alive."
Paladin: "No, it's not a 'mark,' it's a divine challenge, which includes a mark effect. Fighters don't have a 'mark' thing either, what they have is a 'combat challenge' class feature."
Ranger: "I get to make two attacks per round as an at-will. Your thing might push him, but I get two attacks. And I can quarry that critter too."
Rogue: "I think I should get roleplaying experience from finding treasure. Just sayin'. Anyone want to be my flank buddy this turn?"
Warlock: "I'm not evil, I just have the infernal pact. What? Why wouldn't your lawful good cleric of Bahamut like me? You'll still heal me, right?"
Warlord: "Anyone want a shift? Don't forget, you get bonuses on that dude until the end my next turn."
Wizard: "No, this one targets Fortitude, not Reflex. The fighter is tough, he can take it. I'll roll the attack against him first..."

D&D has never really discouraged hammy acting... it's just that the cheesy quotes have moved around.

I miss those. If and when 5E comes our way, I hope they put the cartoons back in.

Eberron has cartoons in its line of books.
They're not quite the same "New Yorker"-esque line art, and they're frequently not funny, but they're there.
