So, I was bored and playing with DDI and came across the Superior Weapon: Spiked Chain. Not exactly the most powerful weapon(2d4, reach), but one that I find to be particularly flavorful and thematic. And that's right up my alley, I love flavorful and thematic, the weapon fluff adds that it was supposedly developed by elves.

So here's my thoughts. I'm thinking
Spiked Chain
+
Elf race(Eladrin, elf, half-elf)
+
Class????
=
cool concept.

So right now I'm trying to find a class to fit this, I'm thinking of going with Avenger, as Avenging Resolution lets me get a minimum of 3 on any damage die I roll against my Oath target, given I roll 2d4, that's almost max damage. But I've played Avenger before, I like it, but I'm not real sold on it as the class I want to go with. The image of this character coming to mind is almost something along the lines of a fantasy-era biker.

So, anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

I would suggest Ranger right from the top of my head. Firstly, the spiked chain is a double weapon, best used by someone who can use two melee weapons at the same time. Secondly, the ranger is tough, but not defender tough. The Ranger is probably the largest damage dealing class in the game, so the Ranger will kill you if you screw with him. Thirdly, he wears leather. It's the obvious choice to me, and I can't think why any other class would be taken instead. It's basically everything you're looking for. Maybe ask your DM for streetwise instead of Nature of Dungeoneering as a starting skill?

I can't think of a better class for your character. Anything else seems like it'd be too forced or somehow render your weapon choice irrelevant to useless.

The spiked chain is a two-hander, not a double weapon.

I have my Hellbox concept floating around...he's a Warforged who was built to be a living LeMarchand Puzzlebox. Which is to say he's one part Hellboy, one part Cenobite from the Hellraiser series.

Box, a.k.a. Hellbox

Hybrid Battlemind/Warlock

SKILLS:

Arcana
Athletics
Intimidate

Power Points: 2

LVL 1 POWERS:

Eldritch Blast (W)
Iron Fist (B) (Augmentable)
Bull's Strength (B) (Augmentable)
Flames of Phlegethos (W)

I'm still undecided about which Feat to choose first- Hybrid Talent to get the Battlemind Armor would improve survivability; WP Spiked Chain is appropriate for the PC's flavor, but isn't crucial to the early levels; Ritual Magic is on the list- I want him to be able to incorporate his own components (even though I can't make the spiked chain into one). And, of course, there are other options.

Now, as stated, this was for a Warforged, but the basic concept could be tweaked for any race.

When did that change? At any rate, you can take a feat for it to be. However, I'd go with a Barbarian, then.

Apparently it's that by default, but yeah I just found the feat to make it a double weapon that does 2d4/2d4. With that in mind, I see how Ranger with all it's double-weapon stuff can be pretty darn good. But see, this is why I ask, find something cool I wasn't aware of before, find all sorts of neat extra stuff.

Interesting as that feat is however, apparently DDI can't implement the weapon changes. I mean I can do the math on my sheet...but lame, feat's from 2009.

At any rate, I've always considered the Ranger and the Barbarian to be the most biker-like, with a Rogue tossed in here or there.

The spiked chain used to be a double weapon in 4th edition by default. My book says so. I hadn't checked the updates before my first reply. I imagine that change was due to it being only significantly useful to Ranger, other classes taking some kind of hit for using it instead of a more traditional weapon.

Yeah, we've already got a barbarian though.

Well I'll have to get out my book then!(it's hiding around here somewhere, stupid digital age). It's a nice feat though, any class who does striker damage just looks 10x cooler in my head wielding a spiked chain instead of more traditional weapons. d4's are still kinda awkward though.

It's a good match, we had a half-orc barbarian spiked chain wielder who was very effective. If you like the concept there's no reason not to have 2 barbarians in your group; after all your concept is unique and probably won't step on the other player's toes as "the barbarian." And there's even a Berserker subclass from Heroes of the Feywild you could try - it is a bit more defendery at base, becoming a striker when it rages.

Rouges can do wonders with a spiked chain.
Elves, Eladrin, and Drow all make good rouges.
Also the Scar Enforcer was a prestige class from 3.5 that was meant for Half-Elf rouges (And has a picture of one using a spiked chain!).
Just Saying.
