I usually choose a simple core class character for new player. I also encourage them to play a character that correspond with their personality. That allow them to focus on learning the game mechanics. I usually don't recommand sorcerer for new player unless you are willing to coach them.

My wife started playing a few months ago. she chose to play a standard acrobatic/stealthy rogue, she really enjoy it.

I understand that some people have the "I don't want to wear the same dress/shirt" attitude, but you will quickly see that the more skill/hability whatever her character has the less she will be using them without you or another veteran player reminding her.

If she has no experience everything will be new and different for her.

You may suggest she look at the hexblade class in the Complete Warrior if you have it... I don't think it's overly complicated and it has abilities that touch on many different character archetypes; fighting, spells (some of which are sneaky), and social-interaction skills (like diplomacy and bluff). It may help her decide which things she enjoys most in play. In addition the hexblade gets a familiar which can be a good in-play and in-character method for you (the DM) to give her hints and tips from time to time. You may have to help her out a bit with stat allotment, skill point distribution and beginning feats etc., but if I were just starting out I'd want help with that for any character I was creating. If she wants something different that may be an interesting class for her to experiment with.

I started playing about one and a half year ago and my first character was a halfelven druid. I enjoyed playing her at very low levels but after a short time I felt a little bit boring about her as she couldn't really attend combats.
My second character was a halfling sorceress and I really enjoy playing this character. Specially the spontaneous casting makes it easy for a beginner to play as the wizard and also playing a halfling, who is chaotic neutral, makes a lot of fun. ;)
I would give the advice to start with a not to complicated core class, like the sorcerer is. Otherwise to get all the rules would be very complicated. Combat rules you can learn very easy during a running campain from all the other players.

I play an older female human ranger. She knits. While she was away at the equivalent of a knit-out, her home town and family were destroyed by orcs. She is the daughter and granddaughter of famous archers and learned to shoot well as a child. She was kind to a strange old woman in the woods and was rewarded with the ability to shoot flaming arrows. She still had a rough time surviving until she bluffed her way into a job as a caravan guard. She watched sword practice but never had a chance to try it herself so she is weak in close combat. She trys, usually successfully, to get above the fight and cripple the enemy so her allies can finish them off. She has an average charisma and usually is just not noticed. She doesn't trust people easily but can start feeling maternal about other members of the party. She is listening and watching when she is knitting. Don't annoy the old b***h with the pointy sticks.
