Character Problem

Well, we played. We had some adjustments to make, but they were okay.

He and his friend had rolled their stats instead of doing the 32 point buy. He was a bit high, she was a bit low. They'll adjust.

He's had a chance to look at the detailed listing on Vow of Poverty and now understands what our concerns were.

My one disappointment in the game session was that when faces with a challenge, the group decided to just spend money to solve it. It's quick but expensive. But that's a story for another thread... Maybe in Story Hour...

When they go broke, they'll have to consider other options.

We had two characters coming in who hadn't spent much of their starting budget (88k for 12th level according to the table in the DMG), so they were cash rich.

Emphasis on the "were". They aren't any more. It's a self correcting problem. :)

While the other players/DMs may or may not be comfortable with him, our characters are another story. They are by and large of Good alignment, and very few would willingly have any truck with a necromancer of any flavor.

It may be too late but it's probably worth having a discussion with the players regarding what could tear the adventuring party apart and what the characters will and will not stand for. If there are Good characters who would have an issue fraternizing with a necromancer, you should nix necromancers before the group implodes.

That's something each of the players/DMs will have to work out for themselves.

The PC is supposed to be true neutral, so alignment conflicts shouldn't come into play. We already have a PC Druid/Ranger with a stick up his... back about Apothacaries selling rare animal parts. He's quickly becoming a serial killer, and his alignment is rapidly heading towards Evil. If we can put up with him...

And it's entirely plausible, in game terms, for our enemies to try and slip a ringer into our ranks. So even if there ends up being inter-party conflict, it's one of those things we should just be able to play through.

As an update: The player thought that the Half Vampire template make him undead, as in healed by negative energy and harmed by positive. I pointed out that the template doesn't actually say that anywhere, and gave him the option of running it either way. After some thought he decided to have a heartbeat. If he hadn't there would have been that terrible scene when his character went negative in combat and one of the clerics tried to heal him.

It would have made for a short if colorful career.

Instead of trying to run the Vow of Poverty route, he's now pursuing the Draconic Heritage feat chain. For some reason he seems to be envisioning his spell caster in close combat, a role that most spell casters avoid like the plague. It'll be interesting to see where he ends up going with this.

I've spoken to another DM who's played with him, and he concurs that the player doesn't know the rules very well. It will be an education when it's his turn to DM an adventure. The DM can't be wrong, but he will run into a lot of raised eyebrows and more than a few rules questions.
