I have recently joined into a new, ongoing campaign. The current characters in the game have been doing a bit of plane-hopping, and I'm not entirely sure where (which plane of existence or world) I'll be joining them on. It's a high level game, and the character I'm making will be ECL17.
The other characters are a lich, another undead of a sort I'm not certain of, a mage/psionicist of some sort and a currently missing mostly elemental dwarf. It's a pretty wacky set-up, but after sitting in on a session, it sounds like it'll be a lot of fun.
They requested that I pick up a template or a more powerful race so I wasn't suddenly higher level than everyone else and theoretically more powerful. I've found a concept that I like quite a bit and hope will be very fun to play. So the character I've come up with is a Tiefling Rogue/Monk.
In my brainstorming to figure out a concept, I was browsing through my Monster Manual and landed on the Doppelganger page. I briefly entertained the idea of a Doppelganger, and the idea of some limited shapeshifting sort of worked its way into the concept I eventually developed.
It actually worked out fairly well in light of needing the level adjustments for the character, and so I had created the character with the half-doppelganger template in mind. Shortly after, I started working on all of this, I was flipping through my Eberron core book, and found the Changeling.
The other players have all taken liberties with developing things for their characters, and as long as the changes meet with group approval, evertying is good.
The half-doppelganger template (from Dragon 313, I believe) is supposedly a +2 level adjustment, though their appears to be some contention over whether it's worth that.
The changeling race from Eberron has no level adjustment.
The idea for the character is that one parent (the father) was a doppelganger or changeling, and the mother had a bit of fiendish blood. The union resulted in a child who was part fiend, part shapeshifter.
My goal is a melding of both that produces a +2 level adjustment character. Figuring out what equates to a +2 LA baffles me, since I haven't been able to find a guide with criteria and so forth.
As I see it, I have three options for the character. Create a new race that melds both the Tiefling and the Changeling into a unique race. Create a half-changeling template and apply it to the tiefling. Or just use the half-doppelganger and, if necessary adjust if the others feel the +2 LA is accurate. For the moment, I am ignoring the fact that the Tiefling isn't a Humanoid for the half-doppelganger template, since that's what the template calls for.
If it were you, which way would you go?
