So you'd expect a wizard in your campaign to keep track of which spells in his spellbook(s) came from "spell research" at every level and which came from scrolls?

I tend to ignore them in general. The only thing I do is I don't let new characters come in with magic items at all. That way the average party wealth isn't hugely increased every time a character dies.

Typically it isn't long before the old characters start handing out unused magic to the new guy anyway, so it seems to work out fine.

FWIW, IMC I noticed that the party varied between being far above recommended wealth (~160%) to being at 54% of recommended wealth. Unsurprisingly, complaints were long and detailed when they were below wealth, but absent when they were above. :uhoh:
