Charging in to your death

Quasqueton

First Post
Have you ever gone into a battle you expected to loose? Gone into combat expecting to die in it?

How did you know you'd loose or die?

How much time before the event did you have to "prepare"? How did you prepare?

Oh, plenty of times. The sad part is, I have a tendency to take on other PCs with me :uhoh: I especially mourn the last PC, a beloved of my PC that died while trying to save my character from the hands of a gang of hags...

I usually don't prepare. I just charge. :heh:

I've charged all sorts of things that I expected not to walk away from, but I have yet to lose a character...the closest I ever came was my level 16(?) Barbarian who charged the many-tentacled beast in the 2e adventure "Axe of the Dwarvish Lords". I charged it, and just kept chopping away at it while it drained levels. I nearly died, but it was forced to flee.

With a particular DM, and to some extent, another, I enter pretty much every non-random encounter with, in mind, the prospect of dying. Of course, in both their campaigns, raise dead isn't much of an issue.

A group of low level characters (4-6) accidentally awakened long dormant vampire. The vamp fled, but over the course of several adventures harassed us, sending minions out, etc.

It had tried to seduce an NPC and we pounced on it. My half-orc barberian went into a rage and hacked it unmercifally. However, due to it's DR and my lack of a magic weapon I didn't do much. However, I did do max damage in one hit and like 5 points got through. It wasn't happy and sliced me 6 ways from Sunday. Literally. I knew I would die, that I had no chance, but I played in character.

Twas a nice funeral, after my body was creamated to make sure I didn't come back from the dead ;)

I like to play the martyr hero character. I die. I will rush in and give everything I have, and play my character out, even if it means doing something stupid and dying. :)
