Chess and diagonals

Both. The comment about "going anime" is humorous sarcasm; the rule changes to Chess are real. The game has a long history of development.

And continues to have new versions.

Every few years, the U.S. and International tournament and rating rules (i.e. splat books) change. Course, they have used the same core rules for several centuries now.

Imagine that. Core rules that haven't changed for centuries. No wonder it is the Game of Kings.

It is an un-fun rule. In chess 4.0 it has been removed in order to provide a streamlined and improved chess experience.
And pawns were removed so that all the races..errr, I mean pieces... were balanced across the board.

Rock/paper/scissors FTW: the only game that was ever truly non-symmetrically balanced for all possible play options... at least until the splatbooks ruined it, of course.

Oh yeah, the one that introduced dynamite.

Every so often, I've seen Chess given as an example of a classic boardgame that counts squares and diagonals as the same distance.

I'm sorry - it doesn't. It just doesn't care about distance.
I haven't seen anyone talk about squares vs. diagonals in chess. But I probably just missed it.
What I myself have referenced in chess is that the movement is abstract instead of rational.
