The BIG problem with the david Lynch film is that it rained at the end!!
Paul is a man playing god NOT a God!! That is the point and Lynch screwed it up for a dramatic ending.

not to mention the weirding way being a blaster weapon rather then fighting technique *shudders*

that's one thing at least the newer movie seems to have done better

Yes, in the Lynch Dune the Fremen were wimps who needed technology to be nasty. And the villains tended to be more disgusting than devious.

I far prefered the version that appeared on Sci-Fi, though I'm curious to see the international release.

It was cheaply produced- limited budget, yes. I disagree that cheap automatically means 'poorly produced'. Is a theatre show crap because they use painted backdrops instead of a real forest or ship? It was a representational, not presentational, show, and I rather liked it.

And the americanization of names drove me nuts. Its not har-ki-nen. Its HAR-KOE-NEN fer crying out loud!

It's ironic that the 'americanization' bothered you, because the author was an American. In any case, that's a really obsessive-anal-fanboy thing to be bothered by. Rather like the LotR nuts who get into heated arguments about the pronunciation of 'Legolas'. I'm a fan of both sets of novels, but I can't bring myself to be angry over a name.

This might have been a simple misunderstanding of the pair of vowels "OE." In names such as Groenig and Koenig, the correct pronunciation of the first syllable is "grae" and "kae." Though I cannot remember the way it was pronounced in the Lynch movie, I think that may help - at least somewhat.

In the Lynch film, it is Har-KOE-nen - almost equal accent on the first two syllables, but the middle syllable is stressed a bit more (at least when the Baron says his name).

I tried to watch the new one, but couldn't make it more than 10 minutes or so before I turned it off. The Lynch film has a lot of problems, but at least I could sit through the entire thing.
