Choices, choices....

Go for the moaning horde of lumbering zombies, and the smelly squad of bloated kuo-toas.

Nothing beats a great visual experience. Your players willl pay more attention to the action, be drawn deeper into an imaginary world, feel real awe as they gaze at their characters' horrific-looking opponents, and they'll retain vivid visual memories of the battle.

Of course, besides your monstrous miniatures, you gotta make sure to prepare a really sweet adventure to back it all up!

Why not just use your favorite DnD miniatures in a Modern rules, Buffyesque campaign, vs a zombie making necromancer, in a small coastal town plagued by kuo-toa looking sea-demons...

No reason BBEG's in the campaign can't summon other DnD-like monsters from other dimensions either. Or why the heroes can't travel to other dimensions for specific missions (like when the Angel crew went to Lorne's home dimension & wound up rescuing Fred).

Just an idea.

As an earlier poster said, ask the players, and see to them which one sounds cooler.

If the players are amenable to both, then pick the one that you (A) have most fun with, and (B) sounds the least amount of work for you.

If it were me, I'd run a classic D&D campaign, and do any other ideas I had as one-offs; take time to build pre-gen'ed PC's, a good plot, making sure to incorporate the things that make the setting or system cool, etc.

Then again, that's EXACTLY what I'm currently doing - running a Forgotten Realms campaign, and on the side running a series of one-shots of games we'd never play otherwise, such as Arcana Unearthed, Aetherco's Continuum, Spycraft, etc. I just tell them, "once a month, I'd like to try a one-shot with this particular theme," and I've never gotten "no" as an answer yet.

I dont have the mental stamina to run two games at once, even if they alternate weekly.

Plus the players around here, they wouldnt be able to keep their focus if the game wasnt weekly.

Hrm.. *ponders*.

I think Zombie-a-Go-Go had a point. Have you asked the players what they prefer? If both of these options appeal to you and you can't decide maybe you should find out what appeals to the players more and see if that tips the scales to one of the options.

If you're going to run a buffy-esque game, you really can't go wrong with the Buffy RPG from Eden studios. It's a really top-notch game with a system that just fades into the background. And it emulates the show pretty much to a T. Players even get bonus points for coming up with witty remarks or pop culture references. Its close enough that when I'm watching the show I find myself breaking the action down into game terms. Ooh, Buffy just did a Decapitate maneauver with her sword, and Xander used a drama point to stake the vamp from behind!

Easy system too. I really didn't find it too unfamiliar from d20. There's no levels, but you have your skills, traits/disadvantages (like feats but some of them are bad), and two different classes of character.
