D&D General Chris Perkins and Stan! - previous D&D edition thoughts

Jake Gyllenhaal Reaction GIF by MOODMAN

I am surprised at the focus on younger audiences since the biggest breakthrough successes for D&D in the past decade (Critical Role and Baldur's Gate 3) are very much teens & up, R-rated, and didn't set out to please the whole family. I would take my cue from that if I was them.

Except 4e because f--k those guys, amirite?

Oh geez, not you too, Chris Perkins. Edition warrior badge earned.

I am so, so disappointed by this video. One of my heroes with feet of clay revealed.
Oh good lord.

Perkins isn't an edition warrior for stating his opinion on the game. The opinion of somebody who has worked on every edition of the game. Sheesh.

Relax, pour a cup of coffee or something.

That seems strange to me. Are you playing 5E super detailed, or did you play 3E super loose?
Neither. The combat system is simply very similar. Everything about 5e combat, after not actually playing much D&D per se the last several years, feels very deja vu to my many years of 3e.

He literally worked on 4E. You'd think he know what the motivations behind the design were. I liked 4E too. No need to brand someone an infidel because they say 4E has video game influences... particularly when it's one of the actual designers! Wow...

There are some important details that are different -- mostly thing that have been simplified for or removed from 5E. It is much more tactically forgiving (and therefore more tactically bland).

I really can't see he problem here. All the designer taking part in 4e, has talked about how they were inspired in one way or the other by video games.
I mean, I remember the days back then. MMOs were huge and "the new thing" back then. I could totally see how people at WotC looked at that and got inspired. Further, what if they did? It doesn't in any way diminish 4e.
There was a contingent of folks that latched onto any idea MMO was an influence and beat 4E like a redheaded step child with it. Seems silly today, but at the time MMOs were seen as the enemy of table top gaming. Some folks still have bad memories of those days.
It's not just MMOs either. I knew a lot of groups that complained about how Diablo 2 stole their players. I think the fact is that online multiplayer provided the experience that some TTRPG players actually wanted more than TTRPGs. That's fine too.

It's kind of funny seeing 4vengers attacking someone that was in the "Ze game is ze same" video.

No one here's actually claimed 4E is WoW either. It's a strawman argument wheeled out if anyone says 4E was influenced by video games.

The hard coded roles alone and encounter powers essentially prove that lol.

Its not a bad thing by itself hell I'm ripping off large chunks of BG3 myself.

When asked about what he saw as part of the future of D&D (though it's hard for him to answer this one since he's on staff at Wizards!):
  • There'll be more daring in the future of D&D as to types of products released.
  • We'll see a lot more attempts at products for younger audiences.
  • Also fun experimental cross-over stuff. (Much as Magic has been having fun with Universes Beyond product lines).
Sounds good, but it's so vague, this could mean all sorts of stuff. But very much a fan of shaking things up now that they have a steady foundation for the next 5-10 years.

Yeah, I'm happy to hear they're hinting at trying new stuff. I might not like the end result, but there's plenty of 3rd party content out there if I don't like the official WOTC stuff.
