Chris Pramas and his thoughts on GSL

Chris Pramas posted a new blog item today regarding Green Ronin's future plans and his take on the revised GSL. (Not sure if this topic has appeared in some other thread.)

Ex-Teenage Rebel

I thought it was well considered, well stated, and made perfect sense. I'd much rather see GR focus on Mutants & Masterminds than branch out too many places. I'm also intrigued by their Fire & Ice game, for example.

As you said, a well thought out and articulate response to those interested in seeing GR jump into producing for 4E.

In the end, WotC's inability to produce a timely 3PP liscense when the game was launched and interest was at its peak has done a good job of keeping a number of good 3PP providers away from 4E. Hopefully for 4E fans, the revised GSL will draw some of them back.

I wonder what the gaming landscape would have been like if the revised GSL had been out at the time when WotC's first promised it would be?

Yup makes perfect sense. While I wouldn't have minded some 4e GR goodies, I completely understand their choices.

Good luck with the other games.

I wonder what the gaming landscape would look like if 3PPs got the draft license and rules in Oct '07 as was originally stated. I imagine it would be a rather different landscape today.

Yeah GR had some of my favorite d20 products when they did stuff for 3e. Too bad they're not doing anything for 4e. I do understand not having enough resources to spread out to 4e though.

I don't know if it would have been TOO much different. I mean in GR's case, I know he mentions the delay being part of his decision... But still. Seems like they'd chosen to concentrate on building their own brands a long while before the 4e announcement.

Would a timely GSL really have changed that?

I also wonder, if this is ultimately better for the 4e market. My meanign is: if GR has chosen to concentrate on their own brands (and rightly so) then even if they DID do 4e stuff, wouldn't it be in the "lesser" projects category? Meaning lesser resources for the books, and overall possible lesser quality then we'd be used to from GR.

I guess that it's basically just some natural evolution of the RPG industry. The bigger you get, the more dangerous it is to "limit" yourself to following WotC's lead and plans. It is much more profitable and safe if you can manage to "cross over" and take the fans you have acquired during your years of D&D and go do your own thing.

I'd suspect that if it came out in a toimely matter AND was not as hostile as the original things will look a bit different.

Its funny, pretty much the companies that were, well, businesses moved on after Wotc's delay. Whether its Kenzer/Goodman's copyright route, or Pazio or Green Ronin's move on to other core items....ones that werent could wait it out like Necromancer games.

One could lay the splintering of the players at Wotc's delay.

What license? Isn't Pathfinder derrived from the SRD and therefore OGL by nature? Or are they opening up IP (deities, etc) as well?

They're not opening up the IP, but my understanding is that they're going to create a special license so that you can actually say "compatible with Pathfinder" (or something to that extent) on products.
