First, read this comic:

Funny, right? Now read this follow-up:

http://www.chick.com/articles/frpg.asp

How many gamers here are Christian (you don't have to be devout, but you at least must believe the basic principles)? What do you think of this?

The guy who wrote this article has no credibility whatsoever, and it is clear in his biased articles. I found it insulting to read even from an intellectual standpoint, much less a gamer. He seems to imply that:

1) Acting and roleplaying should only be allowed if they enact what is in the Bible. This implication is absurd in so many ways Kierkegaard would be proud. Most notably, if people were to act as Lucifer in a Sunday School play, they could be adversely affected.

2) Roleplayers do exactly as the book says. Specifically, that just because someone plays a wizard they will utter their spells out loud.

3) That magic exists. Magical swords are real? What?

4) Being educated about morality is confusing (the section about alignment). Attacking education was a great way to go, in my opinion. What? My kid is learning about how someone can be lawful *and* evil? You know how I feel about learning!

I think he just discovered that stupid people can post on the internet.

to answer you quetion I do see myself as a Christain and I dont see any problem as a Christain with RPGs. As a (somewhat) sane human being I can differentiate between makebelieve and reality.

Jack Chick returns!

I'm a Christian, and I think that Jack Chick is off base here. Sure, D&D could be used in bad ways...but so can a salad fork. And while I, personally, don't like salad, I certainly am not going to tell you that you can't have any salad because salad forks are evil. (Where did that come from...?)

If you need evidence that this is off base, just look at the third paragraph in that second link:
That second link... said:
Just a quick survey shows the cultural impact of D&D and its offspring. Just recently, a spectacular movie called Dungeons and Dragons was released. Additionally, the pop culture is virtually drowning in sorcery and occult related topics
Spectacular movie? Must have never even watched it...hehehe.

Someone will come along and post links to the past threads on the subject, yes? Or perhaps I'll do it later if noone else has...

Chick represents an extremist form of Christianity :\ . Most Christians are reasonable folk with reasonable opinions but it is the crackpots who get all the attention  . Becuase of folk like Chick non-Christians can get the impression that Christianity itself is at fault :( .

Cheerio!

What setting do you play in? In our campaign there currently is a devout Tyr believer (paladin), a Savras believer (mystic theurge), a Tymora follower (bard) and a Sunite enchantress (me). I don't think our barbarian believes in anything but cold steel and the centaur fighter probably prays to some nature goddess.

Or in other words... no real life religions! :)

I played in a LARP once where a salad fork was used as a murder weapon.

See, I told you...they're evil. EEEVVVIIILLL!

And besides, you don't win friends with salad.

[Back on topic]
Like someone said above...the extremists always draw attention...
