Christians and DnD

I get tired of these "are all christians like this?" discussions every time somebody finds this tract and article (it's been posted here on these boards quite a few times). Jack chick is a crack-pot by most christian standards....just because you find it on the internet doesn't make it legit.

I once heard a (non-gamer) Christian attack a (non-religious) gamer for too strongly engaging in fantasy, make-believe concepts that could adversely effect his life. The gamer said: "We have something in common then, my friend, because I think you, too, engage in fantasy, make-believe concepts that could adversely effect your life."

So you're saying Christianity is a fantasy (well...not you...the person who you "heard" say this)...that's great. I'm sure such a remark would convince the Christian that gaming is swell.

This is why these threads should just be killed.

I agree....it gets too quickly into offending others. See post #81.....we should have a forum rule that bans this disscussion.

Chick's site contents disturb me.

On the other hand, it is true that a very few mentally unstable people shouldn't be exposed to D&D (or after-school television, for that matter) because there are elements involved that could damage a fragile psyche.

And as a Christian, I always seem to have a monotheistic world view for settings I create. I'm far more comfortable with that than with something else.

But there are some very disturbed/ing people out there. And we're talking about a nest of them.

Just relating something I observed. Just like the original poster related something they observed.

It's up to you to make your mind up one way or the other.

Chick represents an extremist form of Christianity :\ . Most Christians are reasonable folk with reasonable opinions but it is the crackpots who get all the attention  . Becuase of folk like Chick non-Christians can get the impression that Christianity itself is at fault :( .

Cheerio!
Jon

woa this is probably going a long way bck in the thread so sorry if its totally offtopic but Im actually a secular Jew not Christian, but if theres one thing i have learnt about religion

1. The problems always start with the extremes of any religion (and by this i dont single out any i mean ALL religions)

2. These are always the groups which are the loudest about things they beleive are against their extreme forms of their religion.

you can compare it to MMORPG communities (which i have been around for awhile in UO, NWN and SWG) and its the minority who are dissatisfied who are the loudest, making it seem like they are the majority when they are only a small percentage of the entire.

Anyway thats my 2cents =)

this brought to mind another thing which i think relevant to the topic, there will always be people who will abuse anything. People who take MMORPGs to seriously (Kid who killed himself coz his everquest character died) or the guy who eats to much mcDonalds or drinks to much RedBull and has a heart attack. some people are fanatic exercisers and end up causing massive muscle damage by overextending themselves some become ridiculously obese from spending 95% of their time watching TV and eating unhealthily, some people do huge amounts of drugs which ends up killing them or destroying their lives.

Some people have addictive personalities or depression or some sort of disorder. now this has nothing to do with the religion side of things but the simple fact is SOME people will find a way to abuse ANYTHING.

Then again theres the people wo exercise abit, eat unhealthily abit (or me alot :P) or do some drugs but dont completely destroy themselves with it. Its totally a personal choice which is based on your own willpower and motivations. To say "this is bad because it can be abused" is pretty stupid. In that case, take anything with saturated fats off the market, disconnect TV and ban exercise! (hmmm the last doesnt sound to bad) :P

Religious discussion isn't permitted on these boards. If you want to discuss this further, you may want to head over to a cool forum like www.nothingland.com, where there's a lot of gamers and a forum for just this sort of conversation.

Thanks! Thread closed.
