City of Amnesia

Hi, folks. I've been looking at Iron Heroes lately, and even though I haven't gotten to play or run it yet I really like the looks of it. The classes are interesting, the new combat rules are great, and I love the token system. But there's one thing that throws me off; I'm not used to RPG settings that are so... early. I like big nations and political intrique, which is part of why I like Eberron so much, and a premise where civilization is struggling to hold on and most of the world is uncharted wilderness throws me a little. However, I also like to watch Japanese cartoons. And there's one in particular that I like a lot that has a vaguely similar premise. So, here's my idea for an Iron Heroes campaign:

There's a vast, towering city, and the people who live in it have no idea who it was built by. On all sides, the city is surrounded by dangerous wildlands where monsters roam, and nobody knows what's past them, if anything. There are no history books and no maps. There are different styles of dress and architecture in the city, but no one knows where they came from. It could be the only human settlement in the world, for all anyone can tell. It was about a generation ago when people realized that they had no memories of the past or knowledge of history. People panicked, and in the chaos a self-styled king came to power through force of arms. For a while, life in the city continued, if uneasily, but time passed and people got restless. People got lonely, and scared. So now the king is organizing search parties to go out and see what the rest of the world is like. These search parties generally consist of criminals, vagrants, or others who have no choice, since none of them have actually come back yet...

Does this seem like it has potential, or is it just overcomplicated?

Man I loved that show. Too bad it got cut short and the storyline hastened.

Should work as a setting if the players don't collectively groan or snort Mountain Dew out their noses as realization dawns, though.

Yes, I have nothing of value to contribute here at this moment. Carry on. :p

Thanks, guys. Actually, my potential players are mostly as anime-saturated as I am, so they already know the inspiration for it. That said, the tone of the actual games will probably be more like Johnny Quest or Star Trek than Big O itself--not many adventures taking place in the city itself, more exploration and finding strange and mysterious... things. Possibly green women too, I don't know. I'll have to read some old Jack Kirby Fantastic Four comics and see what comes to mind. I'll also take a closer look at those links. I appreciate the input!

Sounds pretty interesting. Just be sure you're ready to field basic questions from your players like, "Where does the city get its food from?"
