Okay, I was given a new sealed copy ogf City of Heroes and I now have a computer capable fo running it. The question I have is, is the $15 monthly fee really worth it?

Is "City of Heroes" worth it?

I got the massively multiplayer online role-playing game some time ago as a gift. For years, I've preferred face-to-face, pen-and-paper, pizza-and-dice games over computer games, but as a Game Master, it's good to be open to new sources of ideas and to understand where many of my younger players are coming from.

I like the character creation process and the graphical interface of "City of Heroes," even if I don't have the hours and hours to spend improving in level. It's a bit simulationist and reductionist (in terms of deputizing metahuman vigilantes and sending them into gang-infested urban areas) and a bit hack-and-slash for my taste. If you have the time to meet and interact with other online players rather than just Non-Player Characters, there is potential for teamwork (or rivalry, given the recent release of "City of Villains").

However, as someone who still reads comic books and graphic novels and as a past and present G.M. for DC Heroes, Marvel Superheroes, GURPS Supers/Powers, and D20 Mutants & Masterminds 2nd Ed., the idea of logging on with a few friends, slipping into a costumed avatar, and kicking some butt for a few hours is hard to resist.

If you can aford the $15 per month, then yes, it is worth it IMHO. It's combat is very fun and the zones are pretty creative.

My hero is on the Victory server name Dr. Live Wire.

I've just finished a two week trial and, while it was fun, I wouldn't pay to play. It's just hack and slash and I can get my fix of that playing NWN online ;)

Depends on your tastes. I watched a friend play and figured CoH would get me into the MMORPG thing.

When the openned up the two-week trial, my wife had actually taken the kids for their annual week at Grandma's (and my annual week of bachellorhood). Perfect timing. I tried it out and discovered that it really just didn't hold my interest, which surprised me. Of course, I don't much care for multiplayer games, anyway, even just things like Battlenet with Diablo annoy me.

I still think CoH is an excellent game for the genre. If I was single, I'd probably play it enough to warrant the $50 price of the CD, and the expansions, but not the $15/mo. But, as I indicated, that's my taste, not the quality of the game.

I'd recommend you try the two-week trial (which has a download, so you could still keep the box "salable"). See what you think of it. I don't think I've received any spam from them, or anything like that, so you aren't out anything for trying it. Two weeks is plenty of time to get a feel for the game -- a week is probably more than enough, actually.

IMO, CoH is an extremely fun game and the best MMORPG out there. But also IMO, even an extremely fun game and the best MMORPG out there aren't worth 15 bucks a month.

With the sealed copy of the game, I believe you get 30 free days before you have to pay any money. So I'd try playing it for 30 days and see what you think.

Also, the game has the best costume generator that I have seen.

I tryed the free trial they had in PCgamer a little while back, I thought it was good. I did not sign up beause I'm playing WOW and I can only afford one MMORPG at a time. But they have the best character customization tool in any computer game I have seen. You can prety much do any type of costume you want.
