"I say man, watch where you are going! Umph! Look out I say!" grumbles a man struggling to enter through the door of the Red Dragon Inn as several others rush out in a hurry. He finds a break in the tide of runners-by to enter and stand regally upon the inner step. The man has dark hair oiled and combed back into place on his head. A pinched looking face surveys the crowded inn with an upraised eyebrow over the monocle which covers his left eye. He removes the monocle to get a better look at the inhabitants while a second man steps around him and gently dusts off the first man's expensive jacket. The newcomer is bald and attired in a rich servants uniform.

The shorter servant turns to address the Inn's occupants, "Greetings. I am Thaddeus, humble servant of Sir Lucias Darque." He indicates the man behind him with a wave of his hand and a half bow. "Master Darque has come to hire a group of ... you sorts... to perform a job on his behalf. The employment may well require a multitude of talents, so a well balanced group shall be the primary focus. Due to this, my master reserves the right to pick and choose the best from all applicants for the job and will not fill positions on a first come/first served basis. If any interested applicants would kindly step forward and list their names and...skill sets...for consideration, then the master shall proceed to choose those he deems capable of fulfilling his needs."

OOC: Recruiting for a 4 person team of 1st level characters. As balanced as possible for the party. If really needed balance wise, I MIGHT be able to squeeze in a 5th character. No promises though.

"I am Abdul Alhazred, a student of the dark arts, the mysteries of the arcane, and so forth. I am a generalist, unspecialized, and can bend my arts to many purposes: a charm, combat, disguises, and so forth. I would like to volunteer my humble self for this position," says the red-eyed albino elf in black robes, taking off his black floppy hat.

OOC: Finally, employment!

Elthic's ears perk up. "Hello there, Mate! What sorts are you looking for? My name is Elthic. As you well know, one dwarf is worth three men! Hire myself and another, and you save money, and probably get a better job done as well!"

He pauses for a moment, and thinks. "I could explain it to you, but it involves a lot of math. Anyways... I'm a scout, and have served in the Thane's army in that capacity. And I'm not bad in a fight, either."

OOC: Elthic is a dwarven Rogue. And I'm a bit surprised at how much has happened in the RDI lately - place posts so much faster than I'd imagine!

"Hmmm, a very good mix so far. Alas, there are none here capable of healing wounds amongst you four, correct? That would surely be a useful skill. Unless of course, we put a portion of your salary towards some healing potions up front? Hmm, what say you, Master Darque?" asks the servant to his master.

The dark haired man looks you all over with an appraising eye before speaking in an arrogant voice that seems happy to fill the room with its presence, "Perhaps, perhaps. Though I do loathe the idea of giving out such an advance. Whatever is to stop them from simply running off with the advance payment? Ah yes, of course. The promise of more payment after the job is complete...Perhaps indeed."

[sblock=OOC] I'm going to go check the list of who's available here in the RDI to see if there is even a possible cleric to wait for. I like the four characters presented so far, but a lack of healing could be troublesome.[/sblock]

The door opens and a tall, dark-haired man dressed in browns and golds enters the inn. He heads for the bar, nodding to Joe as he does so. On the way, he notices the fop and hesitates for a moment before proceeding. Once there, he turns, scowling, to survey the room. Clearly he is not pleased to see Sir Lucius. After a moment, though, he regains his composure.

“My name,” he says in an firm voice, “is Alvar Thorne. I am an entrepreneur. I am financing a trade venture which leaves Orussus tomorrow morning at first light.”

“One of my employees was just here, looking for a bunch of heroes. Good luck to them! They’ll need it, if they think they’re going to catch him.”

“Now that I’ve weeded out the impetuous, the gullible and the do-gooders, I will be hiring four guards for the caravan. I want people who are level-headed and professional. As this is a well-travelled route, and the risk is minimal, the pay will be at the standard rate. It is, however, just the first run of a new venture, and if you do your job well, there’ll be plenty more work in the future.”

Pausing to look around the room, he goes on, “Now that Master Darque has finished his recruiting, who here is looking for employment?”

[sblock=Adventure details]I’m recruiting for a short adventure to help cater for the large number of PCs in the RDI at the moment. This adventure for four first level characters is based on the Side Trek “The Little People” which appeared in Dungeon Magazine #67. Any party mix would be viable, although some combinations may require more careful play than others.[/sblock]

"Well, I say there. Thank you for assuming that I was done recruiting before you trudged in here to make your pretty speech. As it happens, I am happy with those who have stepped forward, and I wish you luck picking among the remaing dregs of ale-imbibing barflies." Lucias says imperiously to Alvar Thorne. Without giving time for much backtalk, he proceeds to turn and walk out the door. His servent, Thaddeus quickly waves Xir, Eleria, Abdul, and Elthic to gether their belongings and follow him outside for a more thourough briefing...

OOC: I guess we will go with the first four then. Go on over to the "PH1-The Darque Demense" for a full briefing. For all those 'ale-imbibing barflies' left in the RDI, please know that I mean no offense. After all, my last character Saithnar is among those 'dregs' now left behind. Unfortunately, being 2nd level, he can't even get employment with Alvar and gets to wait for the someday when this mythical bunch of adventures will get rolling. ;)

Taelythenihel Nimmilemar pushes open the door and sweeps across the room, breathing hard. "Foolishness," she snaps. She heads upstairs to the guest rooms. A short minute later, she returns, with her odd hooded servant, carrying a shield and dagger, a pace behind her. She directs her servant to a table, collects a cold drink for herself, but not her servant, then seats herself. After a moment, Taelythenihel leans against her companion and takes hold of a gloved hand, but the other does not stir.

Eleria remains quiet during the dialogue between Thaddeus and Darque, listening very carefully to the interchange between them in an attemt to determine their intentions. She glances at the newcomer [Alvar Thorne] from the corner of her eye, though dismisses all interest when Darque and his offsider leave the tavern and beckon for her to follow.

When Darque and Thaddeus leave, she leaves with them, hoping that they will soon reveal the nature of the task at hand.

Moments after Taelythenihel, Valdaris returns to the inn looking tired and disgruntled. He marches straight over to the bar and orders a drink to quench his thirst as looks around the inn and reflects on the situation.

OOC: 'Nock, you're a slippery devil. That was a good one you pulled on us! :o

OOC: DEM- I'm waiting for all four of you to post in the 'PH1- Darque Demense' adventure thread to continue. When everyone meets over there, all will be revealed! :D
