For those who see Greyhawk as being pretty bland, I highly recommend reading Gary Gygax's Gord novels (particularly Saga of Old City). He really breathes life into that city and makes it a pretty awesome place. (Truth be told, if I hadn't been exposed to it via those novels, I'd probably be voting it off as bland this round myself.)

I'm going to vote for Sharn- it just doesn't gel for me quite on the level that these other cities do.

Goodbye Sharn.
Agreed!

Lank..lahnk...err... city from old novels I've never read you're next.
They're more like collected stories and you're really missing out. Fritz Leiber is right up there with Robert E. Howard in my opinion. Fun stuff.

Sigil's getting my vote after Sharn. I'm not keen on extraplanar cities. I'm also not keen on doughnut-shaped cities that just happen to be levitating over giant phallic symbols.

Goodbye Greyhawk. Again.

Next I will probably vote for the two cities I don't know much about. After all, lynch mobs are often ignorant fools, so it's high time we started acting like one!

Out with Lankhmar and City of Brass next time, as I don't have any detailed RPG source material on them available - my personal criteria here for judging these cities...although I can't wait to buy Necro's CoB promiseware. I don't have my City of Greyhawk stuff any more either... sob...

ignorance in democracy

Hi all -
One city I'm kinda disappointed in not seeing is Bard's Gate, by Necromancer Games.
But Greyhawk is boring? That is because people haven't read the novels, or in some cases didn't realize it was a city but just a setting, as previously posted. Thus for their ignorance, they should be forgiven, but should not be allowed a vote. Although we do live in a democracy in which more people are likely to vote on this and the previous polls than likely vote in their primary and general elections during the off years, so ignorance is not a reason not to vote.
But to really vote, some knowledge and background besides a one line option should be given, but that isn't really the author's required doing.
To vote off a city, you don't have to own the book, or even have ever played in the setting but a little familiarity should be known. Greyhawk City is run by a former thief, ruled by a secret society, which includes the assassins guild. The city was built from it's trading post background by a wacky wizard some would notice is an anagram for Gary Gygax, who later imprisoned several very powerful deities, which allowed himself to become a demi-god.
These are all very important aspects for the city which many would notice is related to some of the very best modules ever written (according to Dragon Mag's group of experts). Temple of Elemental Evil, Return to ToEE, are all in the surrounding area, which would indirectly allow players to visit the famed city. Just playing either of those modules would give someone enough knowledge that Greyhawk is not just a world setting, but a truly vibrant city.

Any of the cities listed on this poll or the previous polls are not boring nor would any of them being boring to visit as an adventurer, however a citizen of any of the cities might find them boring. I live in Las Vegas, by no means a boring city, esp. for tourists, but for someone that doesn't live on The Strip, it's boring. I dont' gamble, and all of my friends and family work for companies like Sprint/Nextel, UPS, Comp-USA, Walgreens, and I work for a family practice doctor. All companies that could be holed up in Idaho, Ohio or any other place. Nothing about where we work plays an important aspect to Las Vegas' glory. So Las Vegas is boring. And we don't have a sports team (besides Arena Football).
So All the cities are boring on this list, but you have to look at the aspects that make a city vibrant to an adventurer or to tourist. We have a crazy drunken ex-mobster mayor, Greyhawk City has a crazy mobster mayor. We have more hotel rooms on the corner of Tropicana and The Strip (some 18,000) between the MGM, Tropicana, Excalibur, and NY NY than all of NY City. Add in Luxor's 4,000 rooms and Mandalay Bay's 4,000 rooms and you can beat Atlantic City as well.
So you just have to do a tad bit of research and find that Greyhawk City is not boring.
I voted for Sharn, not because it's a boring city, but because I don't like the Eberron environment. Next I'd vote for Sigil because I don't like the Planescape concept (ok the art is what really kills it for me).

Freeport again, same reason(s) as before.

Psion puts up a great argument for Sharn, though. Thanks a lot for helping DMs! Bzzt.

Greyhawk is boring. <--- My opinion is not based off of disliking the setting or having a lack of knowledge about what I speak. It is based off the fact that I find Greyhawk boring. If you feel that because I disagree with you that means I shouldn't get a vote, then I'm glad you aren't running things. If that sentiment upsets you, then you may have a hard time trying to look down your nose at people on the internet.

The two cities I don't know much about (as I referenced in my post above) are Ptolus and Lankhmar. Those will be getting my votes next. As this poll is really about getting the city you think is coolest to be the last one standing, knowing anything about cities other than the one you think is coolest is neither important, nor required.

I have to say that I do find it funny that you give this big admonishment to people who are voting for Greyhawk (because you believe no-one who knows anything about Greyhawk could possibly vote it away), and then state how your next two voting intentions have nothing to do with the cities themselves at all.

Then again, maybe this is some grand strategy of yours in an effort to keep your favorite city on the poll. ;)

Edit - And judging by the current poll totals, it looks like it is working! Curse you Greyhawk, your blandy doom will be assured next round!

Hey you! Yeah you! Stop voting for Ptolus!

Yeah I voted Ptolus. Its a nice book sure but we've seen it all before

(of course now that Glantris gone most of the rest are rather bland)

I'm hoping Lankhmar primarily because of the stories of Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, but I don't have much faith...

Go Freeport
