To favoured enemies specifically, I generally like aberrations and magical beasts, mainly because these creatures seem to spread across all levels. Something like Goblinoids seems great at L1 (especially in RotRL), but fades into obscurity much like the Sleep spell, pretty quick (and a favoured enemy doesn't trade in like a L1 spell). Giants might be nice at higher levels (maybe a second choice, rather than the L1 selection) - once they come in, they don't seem to go out of style. Undead maybe, as something encountered on occasion, but I don't associate the AP with Undead. But they're referenced in the Guide, as indicated above. Evil Outsiders at higher levels, maybe.
Our Ranger seems to make out all right at low levels without his Favoured Enemy(Magical Beasts) coming up much to date, but he'll hopefully see more use of the class feature going forward. Having taken the Monster Hunter trait, his first two favoured enemies were pretty obvious. Trading off for the Woodcraft racial trait makes the first Terrain a pretty easy choice too.
