The problem with Tolkien's elves is that they are plain superior to the other races in his books. They would suck as an RPG race.

Why would it? I've played many a middle-earth rpg and they're great. Despite being so superior, elves don't get any extra limelight in the LoTR-Tale either.

Similarly, I've played many games of D&D in the old days where lvl 2 rogues side with lvl 20 wizards, etc.. .

People need to get off that balance mirage... live's not in balance, and neither is a good fantasy tale.

I'm much more in favor of the idea that elves, as fay-like creatures, don't have souls. Consequentially, I don't think they should recognize any Gods at all, but rather be pantheists of a kind. Certainly I never liked the idea of elves worshiping anything. Elves should regard themselves are living gods, to be adored by other races.

In earlier editions of the game the automatic bow and longsword proficiencies worked very well for elven clerics. The proficiency together with the racial dex mod made elven clerics (and wizards) reasonable archers in addition to their spells. I played a 2e elven cleric back in the day.

In 3e the cleric archer could be strong, and in FR an elven cleric with the Elf domain made a great archer.

Previously none of the core races had a racial Wis bonus. Just adding this bonus to a race might make people consider the cleric class. Also, there are indications that various abilities will depend on "secondary" stats, and a Wis boost will assist multiple classes to a lesser extent.

I don't have a good answer to that point since I don't have any statistics to back my opinions up. From what I have seen (and experienced), players generally don't like when someone else's PC is stronger than their PC over the board. I think many people think like that since a large part of a RPG forum often is taken up by balance problems.

I also think that you can create equally interesting fluff with balanced races as the fluff you can create with imbalanced races so ín that case I think it's better to go for balance.

OTOH, this is a subjective issue and I don't know if my POV is more popular than your without reliable statistics.

Oh, right.

Ah. I see. A very good point, and it may be enough to answer the question right then and there. I'm not jesting here btw; WoW is a large inspiration on dndn 4E, and it is apparently the faveorite pastime of the Wizo's.

Basically, for some strange reason I'm getting the following vibes indicating the stereotypes that were imagined when deisgning the elf class: Male Elf---->Ranger; Female Elves---->Cleric Any Sex Elf---->rogue

Elrond's not an Elf...
Yes. Yes he is. Tolkien half elves are not a seperate race, or a mixed breed. Half elves have to choose between their parentage, after which they are either elf or mortal. Elrond chose to be an immortal elf and go into the West and his brother chose the Gift of Men and his spirit left Arda after he died. It isn't genetics. It is choice.

Yes but Tolkein's elves are a completely diff animal (thankfully), especially after 4E. I mean, tolkies elves are immortal, 4E elves live for 200-300 yrs.
