In the campaign I DM, the players are in a cavern behind a waterfall in the Mhair Jungles of the Forgotten Realms, which also happens to be periphery of a cerebrotic blot. :]

In the campaign in which I'm a player, our party is currently in the World Serpent Inn.

Why is the poll asking for climate, when terrains are listed?

The terrain that they're in is a mix of plains and forest, near a (plains) city. This is generally the most common terrain mix in the campaign world. Their home base is a coastal plains city, right near foothills and mountains. They have been to all terrain types in this current campaign.

The climate they're currently in is temperate, right on the border of sub-arctic. They have yet to visit an arctic region, but they have been to a tropical climate (after playing the Dungeon mag adventure "Nbod's Room").
 

Well, doing Shackled City and atm, everyone's town, though mainly because we had to retreat from the forest after losing a party member. [Got killed by Demons and they teleported away with his body; apparently that was nothing but a random encounter which almost annihilated us].

So I put mountains and city.
 


I thought "Aaaarrrrgggh" was a castle.

Anyway, the characters in my game are tromping all around the Sheldomar Valley, and as of the end of the last session were in a smallish town, so I selected "city, plains," though neither was entirely accurate.

So, I guess that a second, brother thread, would be welcome: as player which kind of climate do you prefer for your PCs to adventure in (vote 3 prefered ones).

I don't know if I have a preference as a player. Any that the DM can accurately, consistently, and clearly describe, I guess. As a DM, I gravitate towards temperate - sub-arctic forests, hills, and mountains, since that's what I'm most familiar with, and its easy to convincingly render.

The town was incredibly difficult for them to reach, and now that they're there they're finding that it's hard for them to depart. Apparently, something wants the inhabitants to stay isolated, so whenever an inhabitant (or the rare visitor) tries to leave, someone that person loves suffers a life-threatening accident.

Either they'll figure out why, they'll kill off their loved ones one by one, or they'll settle down there and build nice huts alongside the river. :D


This reminds me of a swamp my PCs went into a couple of games ago. Entering the swamp was easy, but once in, they were actually in a pocket plane. This swamp was inhabited by some friendly lizardmen. Travel in the pocket plane was mostly through thought - you simply imagined where it was that you wanted to go, and headed off in any ol' direction, and you'd find yourself there.

The lizardman mostly ate some indigenous snakes. the PCs (after about a million divination spells finally figured out that the snakes knew the way out. The snakes were a collective. Only by bringing together several dozen of them could the snake reach consciousness levels. At which point it told them how to get out (a specific portal, with a specific key).

The PCs took the lizardmen back out to the original world, since the had discovered some ruins of their ancestors. Once back, the PCs were trying to tell them how to get back there, which was a challenge, since the concept of "direction" meant nothing to them.

If you do, use Dragonstar. Or pure D&D. But if you love your sanity, don't try to meld it with d20 Modern/Future.
 

In my modern campaign, the PCs are currently in Seattle...

So I voted 'City' and 'Swamp,' as that's the closest approximation to Seattle, as far as I'm concerned...well, the waterfront and industrial district, but that's beside the point; the city was built on a marsh and the surrounding hills.
