Close-Quarter Defense Feat

Certain abilities from books in later 3E came about after designers finally realized that most people looking for "fighting defensively" options probably had Combat Expertise, and had specific text saying, "when you fight defensively or take a penalty of X with Combat Expertise..."

The value of X varied, but IIRC most often the magic number seemed to be 4. So, the answer to your second question is more accurately, "sometimes" (when explicitly stated).

EDIT: In the case of Defensive Opportunist, no. It doesn't specify Expertise, so it would only let you ignore the -4 penalty from fighting defensively.

Thanks for the insight on these feats. I really want to make sure I am using these feats correctly and at the same time making the most out of them if I so choose to take them.

Really hoping Defensive Opportunist worked with Combat Expertise to just plant myself in combat but I shall look for better feats to use for my AoO machine.

Karmic Strike and Robiliar's Gambit.
Will those feats stack when someone hits me generating 2 AoO's?

I am in the middle of a gestalt campaign and monsters are packing serious punches. Then again I will next level have Empathetic Transfer, Hostile at my disposal.
