Student loans?? Where are you from?? Denmark??

Anyways, yeah, I'm visiting Maldur and possibly some other Hiveminders in the Netherlands as well (Bulak, Quathia, and Rav). But I'm soooo looking forward to it.

I'm from Albany, NY, USA.

While in college, I'd save up my money all year so I could take a trip with one of my Professors to Greece to visit ruins and dig sites. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoyed it.

I've been to France (Paris), Switzerland (Geneva & Lucern) and Italy (Rome, Florence & Venice) 13 years ago (so don't remember everything). Rather enjoyed the trip, of course. I remember lots of art museums, lots of churches, and lots of climbing of bell towers in churches.

AO, it's just that the only place I heard of before that has student loans is in europe .. here in Denmark every student gets approx. $500 a month as a student grant from the goverment (and the education is free of charge) plus you can opt for a inflation-regulated-only loan for up to twice that amount each month.

Ah. there are loans here too.

At least, the ones I've dealt with, come in packages at the beginning of the semester and pay for tuition. Other luxuries (rent, food, text books) I worked for through the work study program, which offers student positions on campus. Mine was in the computer rooms as a supervisor/technical assistant.

Now that college is over and done with, I've got all those fun debts I've collected through the loans to pay off in nice, "easy" installments.

See, that's what I don't get, paying for college/university. It must be in a societies best interest to have a well educated population, that must be free of charge as it is here. In addition you get cheap housing and so on.

One should note that I've never gone to college/university but I still believe that is the way a society should prioritise its funds. Though, granted, those that have actually gone to university/college probably earn higher wages than I, but I was just too lazy, but here it is not usual to start university when you're in your 30's so I still have a chance.

I don't know, maybe I should study english, or something similarily obvious.

Heh. Liberal mentality (at least, that's what it is considered here). I hear you. Unfortunately, the Liberals are a minority here and don't even show up on National Elections ballots. To my knowledge, NY is one of the few states that has a Liberal or Green party that always shows up in the ballot boxes. So, at least for now, we can forget about government fully funded higher education.

State schools are cheaper and partially funded by the government, but it still costs a decent chunk of money.

Also, if you don't get a college education here, you can pretty much forget about having a decent paying job (there are some exceptions, but they are few and far between).
