Hmm; I definitely wanna run a dungeon-crawl; how do you guys feel about pregenned characters that the players can choose from? I'd like to be able to just drop in and do this when I decide to do it; I don't feel like spending an entire session on character genning, which is what it usually ends up being.

Carni - I'm sure you know this already, but the four humours were associated with the four elements (I'm not sure of the exact correspondences) and with personality types. (Air: stable extrovert, Fire: unstable extrovert, Earth: stable introvert, Water: unstable introvert). You could sure as hell have some fun with that lot.

(Two words: phlegm mephit. :D)

As a player, I'd be cool with that for a session or two, but not much longer. I think for a one-shot or a convention game pregens are great, but if you want to spend any time with a character, you want it to be the one you wanted to make. (IMHO of course.)

In principle though - sure, for a short term dungeon crawl only.

Yep, working on it :) Perhaps you could help me then; I remembered the humours when trying to work out the effects of a series of symbiotes called exocrines, basically small slug-like symbiotes that trade the protection of their user for plugging into his blood stream and regulating the chemicals and hormones in his blood. For instance, the one associated with yellow bile, and thus fire, is called the Brutebile Exocrine, as it can 1/day flood the circulatory system of the user with adrenaline and organic battle drugs to make 'em go berserk.

Now, for the other three humours, I'd like to do another 3 exocrines, one for each. What kinda things could I do for earth, air and water? What personality traits and game effects to have?

Hmm; what about if you had input into the character but just didn't do up the stats yourself?

For example, say as a player in this game you want to play, oh, a dwarven warmain who's really really strong(just as an example, I'm gonna be mixing and bastardizing D20 and AU pretty freely for this) and a bit of a berserker. The power level is 12, so when game time rolls around, you've got a dwarf, Level 7 Warmain, Level 2 Berserker, and 3 levels in the Hero class from Four-Color to Fantasy with a good amount of Super Strength and Extra Hit Points.

Would you hypothetically be cooler with that? You do up the backstory(or more precisely we work together on it) and the DM does the stats?

I have no problem with my players characters(heck, a lot of them are more interesting than a lot of things I come up with), it's just the genning time that kills me.

I personally don't like pregenned characters, but OTOH, for a one-off game that might just run a coupla sessions or so, I probably wouldn't mind.

It's usually best to let players run what they want. If possible, you could encourage them to get as much of chargen done as possible *before* the session.

This is what I try to do, that way you can play withh out spending much time on character gen, but the players still get their own characters

Ahem:

Hippocrates, 455-399 B.C.
- 'Father of medicine'
- taught that disease is caused by natural factors, not will of the gods
- theorized that human bodily fluids are comprised of 4 humors : blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile : when in balance, the body is in excellent health
- theorized that excess blood causes sickness and therefore draining it with leeches(or simple blood-letting) restores the body to balance and healthiness

just a few notes from my history class to clarify a few things

BTW, Drew, that game you're running, 'tis on IRC?

Yep - I'm interested in the effects of unbalancing the humours purposefully, using symbiote exocrines. The idea is, for instance, that the yellow bile, fire-associated exocrine induces anger, rage, general boost in agression; but what kinds of effects are the other three associated with?
